System won't boot past BIOS unless unplugged

Hi all,

Bit of a problem that I can't solve myself. My PC is getting a bit old (built in 2012) with a few recent additions (added a SSD and replaced GPU). When I went to turn on my PC this morning, it wouldn't move past the ASUS BIOS boot screen. I wasn't able to pres DEL to enter the BIOS config screen either. Subsequent resets didn't change anything, with the system hanging at that initial BIOS screen.

The only solution I have found is to physically disconnect the power to the PC, wait a few seconds, reconnect the power and then turn on the PC. This allows me to boot all the way to the Windows desktop. However, if I reset or shutdown my computer, the next startup will hang at the BIOS screen again, and I have to unplug the power. After disconnecting and reconnecting the power, I'm also able to enter the BIOS config screen, but any reset from that config screen also results in the system hanging at the next startup.

Another strange behavior I've found is that when I do the disconnect power and reconnect procedure, once I enter the BIOS config screen, I only have a short period of time (~60 seconds) before the mouse and keyboard inputs stop working. That is, once I'm in the BIOS config screen, after a short amount of time, the keyboard stops working and the mouse cursor stops moving. This behavior doesn't exist when I boot all the way to Windows desktop however.

I've tried resetting the CMOS on the motherboard as per the manual, but this had no effect. The BIOS hasn't been updated ever, so would this be a potential solution?

Is it possible this is just due to the system getting old, or does anybody know of any other potential fixes?

Thanks in advance!

At some point you hear the most bizarre shit and you just have to tell people it's time to tear down replace stuff.

If that wasn't a power rail to the BIOS failing I don't know what is. I mean that the circuit is definitely not working that supplies power over there, likely the caps going.

Even tho it's built in 2012 that rig is not that old to be freezing like it does. i own pentium 3's and don't freeze.

Anyways, what you can do to make a quick diagnostic is:
#1 Take down the PC case and take a look at your MB's capacitors, if you don't know what capacitors are just google them - Bad capacitors could be identified by the puffing/bulging of the casing. The puffed/bulged capacitors are either dying or are already dead. Burst capacitors are dead ones. (BE CAREFUL !!! Don't touch them and DON'T FORGET TO TAKE OUT THE POWER CORD BEFORE DOING THIS.

#2 Do you have any peripherals like: Bluetooth, Webcam,USB Thumb Drive, Xerox. Portable HDD Cd Drive, Wireless PCI card, LAN cable - Even mouse and Keyboard - Unplug them and see if it hangs at boot. if so TRY UNPLUGGING YOUR SSD and go inside bios and see if it freezes.

--------------------------------------------- A Little more complicated steps ------------------------------------
#3 I've looked up your MB, asus says it has integrated GPU if so Unplug your dedicated graphics card, and boot it up, if it hangs, take out all of your memory sticks, than plug one back inside, try to change memory DIMM position (Like slot 1 - 2) and memory stick, sometimes it can happen that either one of your memory modules got broken or your MB's memory DIMM.

#4 If you have a compatible PSU and it's working fine, take out your primary PSU and put the other one inside, plug every cable of the power supply's carefully in. and power it on.

----------- DON'T FORGET TO TAKE OUT THE POWER CORD BEFORE OPERATING INSIDE OF PC -----------
