Upgrading or building a new pc

My birthday is coming up and I've been questioning if I should use my saved money to buy components for a whole new pc build or just upgrade my PC. A few friends of mine say most of my components are still in good shape and reuseable for example my processor: i7-4770..

Current PC:
i7-4770 @ 3.4ghz CPU
ASUS H87-PLUS motherboard
1 stick of 8GB DDR3-1600 Crucial RAM
MSI GeForce GTX 770 2GB
Corsair CX600M power supply (600 Watt)
Cooler Master CM690 III CASE

It's been about 5 years since I've got this pc. I was around 13 at the time and build it myself with help of my father. I am capable of spending around 800 euros on a new system or upgrades. Although i don't know if I should reuse the components and build a new system or buy all new components or just upgrade my system what I have now. Please help !

And if I should reuse my system, which components would be worth reusing and are able to be reused?

The first move is correcting your RAM problem. You have 1 stick in there. The CPU and board are expecting dual channel RAM.

Wait a second. I see 4770 which is 1150 Haswell and it accepts DDR3 RAM. I can only assume that's a little typo.

Anyways you I recommend a dual channel 16GB kit(2 x 8GB) at 1866MHz. Please do not buy a single identical stick. They may not work. I and others here have fielded plenty of questions about why an additional stick isn't working with the...

I think your processor is plenty fast enough. I can run any game on processors slower than yours. I would go to 16 MB of RAM as some games are starting to approach 8. I would go with a 1080 for video....and if you have a mechanical main drive I'd go to SSD.

I and others here have fielded plenty of questions about why an additional stick isn't working with the old one. Dual channel RAM works in tandem with the second stick hence the dual descriptor. That means the advertised speed is an effective one of both sticks working together like a star relay team. Only having one stick handicaps your system and there will be a slight FPS hit.

Next up is that 770. The 1080 will work beautifully with the 4770. It is a VERY beefy and powerful card easily capable of 4K 30fps or 2K 60 FPS with that 4770. It's a bit much for a 1080p 60Hz monitor/TV. For a 144Hz or a 1440p monitor a 1080 is a perfect fit. What about VR? The Rift or the Vive will love your upgraded system. That of course is outside of your budget but later on down the road...

I agree with the SSD upgrade. A 500GB SSD is my recommendation. Top tier games are exceeding 50GB so a basic 120GB or even a standard 250 or 256GB SSD is sorta small.

I've also been looking to get a new case for all the components actually. Can I just reuse my motherboard including the cpu, and powersupply and get new 16gb ram? Also I have got 256gb of SSD and 1tb HDD i can reuse aswell so I only have to buy the RAM, Case, and GPU ?

The reason why I want to upgrade my case is because everything is dusty and boring and I've been feeling to get something fancy compact and new.

I would clone that SSD with something like Macrium Reflect Free to a new 500GB or larger SSD and sell the old one or keep it for troubleshooting/rainy day.

You already knew about the RAM...

Good advice, though i would add that a GTX1080 is gonna be wasted on a 1920x1080 (or less) monitor.

first of all Thanks for your reply. and everything I put is actually a fact. I do have a i7-4770 and just 1 stick of DDR-3 RAM. I've build this when I was 13, and only recently I've discovered it's not the smartest build system around haha.

Second of all, I've indeed been looking to upgrade to a 1080 and also stepping my gameplay up by buying VR-gear which in fact I'm not including in my budget. The 800 euros is only pc-related. I've got some more money laying around to actually buy a 144hz monitor and the VR-gear.

To sum it up I also want to move my stuff that I can reuse in a new case which is fancier and good looking. So the stuff I should be reusing is the motherboard, CPU, and power supply, and get new RAM, a new case and the GTX 1080, correct?

You could always move your gaming library(s)(and then move them back if needed) and most important files to the HDD and start with a clean install.

:D You got this handled. I mean you obviously won't move the RAM(specs. corrected) because you are buying a new 16GB kit but you did miss the 1TB HDD. Just be careful.

One thing I don't like about the Rift is its Store/gaming library. I have at least 4 Steam libraries on different drives. It has my regular games and my Vive games. The Rift allows one. I have backups of games. Do I want to wait for a 52GB download for Sniper Elite 4? No. I only have a 100GB data plan. I'm not looking to waste it if I don't have to. I can move the Oculus library to another drive but I hope they change that and allow multiple drives. To be clear they don't have any native way of moving the games. The only way to move them is with a 3rd party program like Oculus mover or one can move it manually with about a dozen steps.

To be clear I am not 100% positive about Macrium but EaseUs will work.
