Hi everyone ---

I'm sure this has been asked to death but I am a paranoid person so I appreciate anyone taking the time to offer a response to my specific situation:

I have a brand new computer and this morning in a hurry, I unplugged my headphones from the front headphone jack after I put my wool coat on and felt a small shock. The computer was asleep (blue light blinking) and did not appear to shut down or otherwise change. The machine is plugged into a surge protector which is plugged into an outlet in a modern building. I understand the machine and case are grounded, but I am worried that my touching the headphones could have sent a shock through the system and caused some damage that I cannot detect.

Thanks for any advice, reassurance, etc. and happy new year !

Basically if your body is charged up to any voltage that isn't ground and you touch the case or any conductor that is grounded current will flow and sometimes you will get a shock if the voltage is high enough. This hurts nothing.

Here's what you don't want to do. Don't touch any conductor that isn't ground when you are charged up. Examples of this would be the center pin on a phone plug for instance...or pretty much most items on the motherboard etc.

So before you touch anything like that....touch the case first and drain the charge.
