I have an Alienware 17 R3 2016 model laptop that has a 128 gb ssd boot drive. I'm wanting to upgrade to an M.2 NVMe PCIE ssd 512 gb to replace my OS drive.
Will increasing gb, read and write speed, and moving to an M.2 make a huge difference? If so, what will change?
Sorry for the simple question but I'm real new to pc gaming.

You will need to first see if your BIOS supports booting to a NVME storage device. NVME drives use PCIE bus to transfer the data so if your BIOS supports booting to NVME then there will be a very big differance in speed.
