I recently got a new case and motherboard and rebuilt my system with them.
Ever since I have had very strange thermals from my 6700k @stock, ranging from perfect performance with load temps in the 60's and 70's to complete overheating in the 90's and even reaching 100 degrees C.
At first I thought it was a problem with my cooler, it still could be, but I made sure that it was very secure against the heat spreader and applied a generous amount of IC diamond. I added rubber washers to the backplate to make it fit tightly and made sure that the thermal paste was spread evenly, which it seemed to be. Corsair Link reports that the fans are spinning at 1000rpm and the pump is running at 3000rpm all the time, so as far as I know the pump works.
I was getting pretty good performance some times but terrible performance later, seemingly at random. I could play GTA V fine at a solid 60 degrees. At one point I also stress tested with prime95 and got results ranging from 90 degrees to a solid 65.
When it was stable it was after a complete restart, while when it was overheating it was after being asleep for about 18 hours, leading me to believe it was a problem with waking the computer from sleep. I found solutions that wanted me to flash my BIOS to the latest update, which I did. After this update I have been seeing insane temperatures of up to 100 degrees almost instantly with prime95, making me think that my cooler isn't working even though I haven't touched it since I was achieving 60 degrees under full load.
I've tried two different BIOS updates for my ASUS TUF Z270 Mk.1 ranging from the newest to a slightly older one and they both function the same. So, in an attempt to fix my temps. I broke them even more.
I have 3 front intakes, the radiator is mounted to the top, and no other components are even slightly overheating, leading me to think it's not an airflow issue.
Could it be a problem with BIOS or CPU voltages? Should I revert to a different BIOS version? I'm at a loss now for what I can do and the temps are too high to do much besides use a web browser. The weird part was that I had it working well enough that I could play Watchdogs 2 (which pins the processor at 90-100% load) for a solid hour without barely scratching 70, and now, later that day, I can barely launch a browser without it hitting 70.
TL;DR: Temps were stable but fluctuated to overheating on old BIOS update after waking computer from sleep. Updated BIOS to try and fix waking from sleep issue but ended up causing overheating from any load over %50.
Send help.
