intel i7 7700 or Ryzen R7 1700

Hi.. i want i7 7700 with ASUS B250 or R7 1700 with ASUS B350, for gaming.
which one is the better CPU if i am not doing OC?
the base clock of the R7 1700 is just 3GHz, is that critical?
thanks in advance..

The easy choice here is the R7 1700 for multiple reasons. It'll be a bit slower in games but it offers several benefits that the 7700 doesn't. 1. It on the AM4 socket which AMD will stick with until 2020 which means it has an upgrade path, the 7700 has no upgrade path. 2. It's an 8 core which means you can multitask like a champ. If you decide to dabble into game streaming or video editing you'll have no troubles. 3. You can overclock the 1700 on a B350 motherboard unlike the 7700 which can't be overclocked unless you get a 7700k and a Z series chipset.

Just wait until February and buy Ryzen+ if it overclocks better it will be by far the superior choice. 4 Cores won't get you far today, and Im talking from experience.

Edit: That will probably mean that they will come with higher stock clocks.

End result will be unchanged. The i7-7700 would be the better gaming chip.

Also, Pinnacle Ridge won't be released in February. And by the time Pinnacle Ridge is released, he could go for an i7-8700 which will be 100% better for gaming.

Sure it will be a few FPS better in some games, but a soon as he tries to play something like Cities Skylines the 7700 will degrade to a potato, NO ONE should buy a 4 core CPU in 2018.

it`s depends also on the price, i want good budget processor..
if i am not overclocking the r7 1700 is it still better than the i7 7700?

Hi buddy, based on what you say the i7 7700 is better?
in the CPU benchmark of PassMark it seems r7 1700 is a lot better PCU...

The proof are in all the benchmarks made. The Ryzen 7 can perform 60 - 75 FPS in most games, so can the i7 7700. Unless you're gaming at higher refresh rates you won't notice a difference. Though the Ryzen has much better multicore performance which makes it a better CPU all around.

Not really. The i7-7700 is considerably better than the 1700 in games. Check here and here.

Do not trust those benchmarks. Looking at them is a complete newbie mistake. Look at the benchmarks which include tasks you will be using. Refer to the links I've linked above. The i7-7700 is much better than the Ryzen 7 1700 at gaming.

Those links you included suggests there is no benefit of the i7 7700 in gaming over the Ryzen 1700 for refresh rates under 100hz. They also suggest the Ryzen 7 is better min most other areas other than gaming.

No, Ryzen 7 doesn't have better minimums. The i7 does. Yes, the 1700 is better than the i7-7700 when it comes to production and computing that is throughput reliant, but the OP is not looking for that.

Why do you assume OP is not wanting to multitask, research with multiple tabs open + discord + music + gaming? Who knows if they want to record in future.

Minimum framerates are still above 100FPS in most games for the Ryzen 7.

I never assumed OP is using under 100hz, neither did you assume OP is using over 100hz. OP hasn't provided that information yet.

And you can do all of that perfectly fine with an i7-7700. That's not multi-tasking. Multi-tasking is like having Blender running alongside gaming. Also, I did not assume anything. The OP stated he wants the CPU for gaming.

Not really. In a lot of games, they don't even average 100 FPS.

So, we go by the better processor for the task he stated, which is gaming.

Not sure how you got 100% incorrectly? About 1/3 of the games tested (without a gpu bottleneck of course) the Ryzen 7 1700x has a minimum of 100FPS or more, and keep in mind most of these games are heavy AAA games. There will be a lot more older games where the Ryzen 7 can perform past 100FPS.

OP what monitor do you intend to use? For 75hz or less refresh rate, the Ryzen 7 would be a better choice. If you are aiming for high refresh rates (120hz - 144hz +) in modern AAA games, the i7 would be more beneficial.

I intend to use it for 75hz or less..
I think i wil go for the r7 1700 because of all the advantages that Jack wrote although it will be slightly slower..
