Wifi doesn't transmit data when Powerline ethernet cable is attached

Hi guys,

Long time reader here, but first time poster.

I am facing a very weird problem.

I used to have a standard router (from the telco) + powerline adapter (my own) to connect to other parts of the house.

Recently, I have upgraded to an Asus-AC5300 router.

It works well when it is connected to a PC via LAN cable, and other devices via Wifi.

However, the moment I connect the powerline cable to one of the LAN port on the router, my wifi doesn't transmit data. To be clear, the wifi signal remain clears and can be connected. It is just that it doesn't transmit data.

Any one faced a similar problem?

My guess is that there's electromagnetic interference around 2.4 GHz on your power lines, and EMI leakage is affecting your router's ability to make use of certain WLAN channels. It would be interesting to see if the problem persists if the adapter were farther from the router (via an extension cord and longer Ethernet cable). You could also try disabling 2.4 GHz on the router and see if the problem persists when the router uses just its two 5 GHz bands.

That's an interesting problem! Two questions for you:

  • Which model of powerline adapter is it? And is the powerline adapter on the remote end of the circuit also the same model?
Which wifi channels is your RT/GT-AC5300 operating on when this happens?

Hey! Thanks for answering my question.

I am using the Aztech Powerline. Both ends are the same model.

They are on the Auto channel....

This is an interesting suggestion... did not think that my issue would seem so sophisticated  will try it out and see how it goes :)
