Affordable graphics card to make my HTPC 4k capable

Hi guys,

So I built my HTPC 3 years ago and it has been great – a little trooper. However in the last black Friday sales we got a new 49inch LG 4K Smart TV. While I was hoping my APU could handle it I wasn’t too optimistic.

Anyway when I connect my computer to my new TV (over HDMI) the screen/mouse is a little laggy, it’s not too bad but could be better, the slight mouse lag is tolerable.

However whenever we play 1080p content the audio is out of sync with the video. If I delay the audio in VLC by 400ms it usually works. I presuming that the APU is sluggish is trying to get a picture to the TV. We had a 1080p TV before this one and that TV worked fine my our HTPC. 4k video is out of the question – the video just stutters and is unwatchable.

Now my CPU is the AMD APU Athlon 5350 and it sits on a MSI AM1I AMD Mini ITX Motherboard. I use HDMI from the mobo so basically video comes from the APU – obviously this will never drive 4K.

So, my question, what discreet PCIe GPU can I get that will display 4K flawlessly for a cheap/affordable price?

I've noticed a few graphics cards saying they support 4K resolution BUT that might not mean it can display at 60fps - would love the best performance possible

Thanks in advance for your help

https://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-1030/specifications: GT 1030 isn't anywhere near a "gaming" GPU, but it's more than enough for a HTPC for 4K viewing.

There are probably a number of suppliers out there, but EVGA has 3 models available (https://www.evga.com/products/Compare.aspx). Of those, I think they should fit into your case (the largest, 02G-P4-6333-KR, is 169mm long which is the size of your motherboard), but only the 6332 & 6333 models list 3840x2160 (4K) as their max resolution.

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for al your feedback.

FYI my case in the Cooler Master Elite 110 - http://www.coolermaster.com/case/mini-itx/elite110/

It can take cards up to 210mm so these should be fine. I like the idea of the GT-1030 with passive cooling!

Can I presume that with my CPU + a GT-1030 I should be able to play 4K without any video/audio stuttering or issues? I just want to make sure there's no issue with the actual CPU handling 4K loads?

As long as you aren't gaming, any modern video card should be just fine for 4k video playback. Now if you start to get into stuff like madvr hardware accelerated playback (which looks the best), that can get kind of demanding.
