How can I tell which type and brand name video card is good?

I'm looking to purchase a gaming pc for around $500 to $600 tops but I can't tell from the specs how good the video card is. I see the name GTX around a lot. Is there a chart or guide that will tell me how good the cards are?

That is actually a decent budget build. Suitable for 1080p gaming.
