CPU Temp spikes to 80+ degrees for no reason

It usually happens when I'm not even using the PC. I'll hear the fans turn up to full blast and I'll go over and see the temp at 80+ degrees even under 5% load. The fans run at max for a minute or 2 then the temp will go back down to 25-30. This seems to happen at random times. I'll play games for over an hour and temps will be normal but I'll be doing normal browsing or not even using the PC and the CPU temp spikes up and I'll hear the fans turn up. I have an i7 6700k and a corsair h100i. It's been working fine for 2 years except for the last couple months when this started happening. I've cleared all the dust out several times and it's made no difference. Does it sound like the CPU is going bad or maybe my cooler is starting to fail?

The only other thing I can think of is if your pump is sticking at lower RPMs, i.e. when the CPU is idling, and the extra "push" when asked for more RPMs when the CPU heats up breaks it free and it starts working again. Not really sure how to test for this, maybe contacting Corsair's tech support may help.

Seems to be working. I'm running prime95 stress test now. It's been running for about 5 min and temp is 75 dgrees. Pump is 1950 rpm. If I change the profile in Corsair Link from balanced to performance the fans ramp up and the CPU goes down to 60 degrees. The fan speed now on performance mode is nothing compared to what happens when the temp spikes up to 80+ degrees. It sounds like a jet engine when this happens.

OC was at 4.4ghz. I lowered it to 4.2 when this started happening. I can lower it to stock 4.0 but I don't feel like the OC is the issue. If clock speed was too high you'd think I'd see temps higher than 60-70 when doing running prime95.

Maybe there could be some debris in it?

How would I check that? I don't notice any unusual noises.

Short of taking it apart and checking for it I have no idea sorry.

It's been running flawlessly though for the last 2 years. Could it still be the latter 2 when this only started happening recently?

Prime95 running for over 20 min and the highest I saw was mid 70's at the beginning and that's because profile was on quiet mode. Set it to performance mode load and fans are louder (still not as loud as when temp randomly spikes) and temps are in upper 50's to lower 60's. I'll keep an eye on pump readings next time this temp spike happens.

If you are using the thermal pad that came with the cooler it may be dried out. I had to remove the pad on my Corsair cooler after a couple of years and it looked like a brick. Of course the pump failed shortly afterwards :(

If it was the thermal paste or bad seating wouldn't temps be high regularly? The fact that the temp spikes randomly a couple times a day leads me to believe it's a singular isolated event that is causing this whether it be an intermittent pump malfunction or some kind of problem with the CPU. I was going to reapply thermal paste anyway figuring it couldn't hurt but naturally the tube of unopened thermal paste i've seen floating around the house for the last 2 years can't be found now.
