How to create 2 networks from one home modem

Can I put a network switch after the modem but before the routers to create two networks? My son wants to set up a separate network for his home business that would need to be completely separate from our home network. I am thinking that using two routers connected to to the network switch, one with the address ending in .1 and the other with the address ending in .2 might do the trick. Would this work? My home router does not have VLAN capability and I will not be changing it. I do have a Linksys 6200 router to use for my son's use but the criteria is that it MUST be a completely separate network from our home network and be a wired connection.
Thanks in advance for your help!

You would use different ssid.

You would hook the WAN port of the second router to the first router LAN. It would be assigned something by the first router DHCP.

The LAN on the second router needs to be a completely differnet subnet. So if the first router users 192.168.0.x you could use 192.168.2.x
You only get a single IP address from the modem so you can't put a switch there. You can not have 2 completely seperate networks without a lot of work.

If the goal is to protect the work network from the home network you can run modem---home router----business router.

The machines on the business network can get to the home network but not reverse. This might be good enough. You could put rules in the business router to prevent access to the home network but the router would have to have firewall/filter abilities,.

No, that won't work.
The modem talks to one and only one device. A single router or a single PC.
Not a consumer grade switch and then routers behind that.

If I connect the second router to the first router and change the SSID and give it an ending address of .2 instead of the primary router's .1 would that do it? I don't remember if I need to enable or disable DNS lookup on the second router but I can look that up...
Would this create the 2 networks I need? I have to check but I think but I think my extra Linksys router does have firewall settings I can tweak.
Thanks for the help!
