Hi guys, i'm having some trouble with my build ever since i upgraded. I have been using an i5 6500 up until now without any isseus. Recently i installed the before mentioned i7 and turned on my pc. My mobo is an z170a msi gaming m3. My psu is a corsair vs series 550w

The first thing i noticed was that there was no display. I tested the monitor with another pc, and there it worked fine. So, the monitor isnt the problem. This is the only thing im sure about, including display cables.

When i turn the pc on, everything would indicate that it is functioning well. All the fans are spinning, all the leds are on, and there are no debug leds on, which indicate if there are any problems with the cpu, gpu or ram.

I took out the gpu and moved the ram around a bit to no avail. Tried booting with one stick. Still nothing. Tried clearing the cmos by taking out the battery. (and yes i did it properly). I dont have any jumper caps, but i tried to substitute it with a screwdriver with the power cable plugged out. Still nothing.

Ive pulled and reinserted multiple internal and external cables. If you ask me, i would say that either the psu or the motherboard is faulty somehow. However, i dont have the financial means to get replacements, so if there was an easier way to solve this without my knowledge, im all ears.

The only thing out of the ordinary is that the reset button no longer works. The power button works fine, but when the pc is on and i press the reset button, a red light blinks for a second or so (not a debug led, but a red led in the bottom right corner). When i try to short the cmos with the power cable still plugged, a blue light flashes as long as i have contact with the pins. I havent tried my old cpu because im using it for another build, and i hate reapplying thermal paste. My assumption is that it would work with my old one, as i had no isseus with it before. Even so, i dont think the new cpu is the problem.

Sorry for the long post, but the more info, the better. Thanks in advance! This pc is my life...

Solution
krzyimprt are correct.

True it might read it supports the i7 straight out of the box. But look here at your motherboard:
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z170A-GAMING-M3.html
Supports 6th Gen Intel® Core™ / Pentium® / Celeron® processors for LGA 1151 socket

See the problem?

True it supports i7 but that is the i7 6700(k) (Skylake) not the 7th generation i7 7700(k) (Kabylake)

Update the BIOS/UEFI to fix, but can only be done with your old i5 6500 installed.
For Monitor output just pop your GPU in...

You need a bios update to support the kabylake CPU. Pop your old CPU back in, update the bios, swap back to the 7700k.

Are you sure? I didnt pay much attention to my bios software, i must admit, but i might have updated it. It says in the specs that it should support the i7 straight out of the box. And if it were the bios version, how could i update it without a display?

motherboards with the Z170 chipset need to have the latest BIOS version to support 7th gen intel CPU's. unless your motherboard has the ability to take an update without a compatible CPU installed you will have to reinstall your 6th gen i5 to get it working so you can update the BIOS

Thanks alot for your answers! I will try it out in the morning. I really thought it supported 7th gen straight away. Arent you screwed if you initially bought a 7th gen?

Yep, screwed. Some z270 boards didn't even support 7th gen out of the box, haha. That stock is all gone now so the bios should be up to date out of the box.

not completely, but it is a hassle to get it to work since you either need to send it back to the manufacturer to get it updated or buy a cheap 6th gen Celeron/Pentium CPU to get it to boot to install the BIOS update
