If you have the PSU for it -- the PSU is the most important bit of information -- no sense going beyond a 660ti. Modern GPUs frequently don't get along with older PCs with a legacy BIOS instead of UEFI.

My GF has a Core 2 Duo Lenovo. I wanted to put a GT 1030 into it but 10xx series GPU's only work with UEFI not BIOS.
I gave her a GT 730. It was the most her 250W PSU could handle.
She can play a few older games but she's not a gamer.
I mostly did it because the Intel GPU stunk at playing videos.
