2 sets of 2x8gb VS 1 set of 4x8gb for $80 difference?

This is for a threadripper build. I'm still under the impression that x399 mobo's run best with 4-channel ram.

There's a deal for 2x8gb that is $80 cheaper combined than a single set of 4x8gb ram.

Is it no big deal to get 2 sets of the same ram or play it safe and spend the extra $80 on the set of 4?

There is a 50% probability of it not working when mixed from separate kits, but more often than not it does work. Nobody can tell you with certainty that it will work. It comes down to trial and error. Buy it and see if it works out for you. If it doesnt, then return it and get the kit.

oh, my, don't do that!!! especially with a threadripper. spend the big bucks and get the 4x8GB set. The chances of 2 sets of disparate RAM working together these days is really, really iffy

ummm...I'd read the vendor's return policy really, really closely to make sure there is no problem with returns. My personal experience with faster, modern motherboards is that the split between work/doesn't work is more like 40/60, and in a few cases I've seen problems arise months later. I will no longer take the chance on new builds (I now put all the RAM I'm ever going to want into them right off the bat) or upgrades (I pull the old RAM and sell it--getting good prices these days!!). Your mileage may vary...

Well, in my years of pc building, mixing RAM kits with same specs have worked 90% of the times flawlessly. So, it is definitely worth a try. In very rare cases do they fail or play up later on. Amazon has a 10 day return window worldwide i guess. Other vendors might have different policies, so yeah its better to clarify that before purchase.

Yea, it's Newegg, so I know their return policy is pretty solid. I think what I'm going to do is get both sets, try the cheaper one and if it works return the more expensive one. Otherwise vice versus and with the way ram prices are now and supplies selling out I'll have it on hand at the current price.

Gadangit, the cheaper one literally sold out as I was typing this. At least there's another brand for only $20 more, though the heat spreaders are taller than I would like, man it is tough trying to buy ram right now!

Also reading over Neweggs return policy on opened packages, there's a restocking fee so I would only get back 85% which comes down to a $50 loss if I try the cheaper one, don't like and return. On top of that they charge 8% sales tax to my state, so that's an added $30.

UPDATE: I got so frustrated looking at retail sites I dropped on ebay and snagged a used set of 4x8GB Ripjaw 4 DDR4 3000 CL15 for $336 total including shipping. That's a full $100 cheaper than the cheapest set of 4x8GB I could find new after tax. I even read that Ripjaw 4's are optimized for 4 channel, so got my fingers crossed this was a good purchase.

Ha! Yea, for what it's worth I'll try and post an update when I get my parts together and test the system. Looks like the seller is prompt even though they have 0 reviews in the past year, the order is already marked as shipped.

I've been getting so many mixed responses with RAM, a lot of people saying just get the more expensive RAM and not worry about it, but I'm always a skeptic if not a little OCD. At the very least these are listed as a set of 4-channels so hopefully they'll play together okay and I can get it close enough to advertised speeds.

Just wanted to post an update. I purchased 4x8gb (32gb) of G.Skill Ripjaw 4 ddr4 3000 for $336 off ebay. It actually shipped pretty fast, I was able to get it to run at listed speed using xmp. I put it through multiple tests (memtest86 & HCI memtest) and checks out okay. Pretty happy with the purchase and glad I lucked out with a good ebay seller!
