Hi I am planning on building a gaming PC that is not too expensive. I was wondering if this was a good setup for gaming on high settings (GTA V, Just Cause 3, Call of Duty WWII, Minecraft with shaders) I am building this for about $800 any thoughts?

Solution
It is fine for those games. For $800, I will get something like this to run AAA games with very high setting:

You’re giving him bad advice. He would only need to change the GPU as the i5 8400 is more than capable of driving even much more expensive GPUs.

Some bench on the two CPUs for gaming: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/79mcbs/core_i5_8400_vs_ryzen_5_1600_overclocked_gaming/

For 720p, yes, 8400 is much better. For 1080p, almost no diff. If you think your build is better, just show it to us. With high price of Z370 MB, I doubt you can fit in a better GPU with the same budget with 8400.

Z370 MBs start a $119 and they offer a much better array of features than any B350s available. B360s and H370s are being released this quarter and he’s still looking into building it, unless he’s in a hurry or actually plans to OC which looks like he has no interest in since he’s thinking about buying an i5 8400 whatever advantage you may consider AMD has with prices has become a moot point.

The previous build recommends DDR4 3200 memory, so don’t come here and tell me about how Z370s will impede any GPU upgrades as those memories are very expensive. You and everyone else knows that the infinity fabric is very dependent on cas latency to get the most of it whereas an i5 8400 using DDR4 2666 will have little impact in the way of performance which cannot be said about Ryzen.

I’ve got nothing against AMD, but if he’s building his first PC I wouldn’t recommend going that route, there’s still kinks being ironed. In the end it’s his decision and if he does intend to go that way I’d wait until X470s and Ryzen+ drops as the platform will be mature enough to call a setup a simple set it and forget it.

1. Tell me about those features one should desire from Z370 MB, you are being too general.
2. ram speed impacts Ryzen more than Intel, but I will still recommend 3200 for Intel, you never know when 3200 is the limiting factor considering 4000+ ram is already there.
3. Tell me about the kinks.
4. Again, show us the build so we can discuss.
5. I am building with current parts, how do we know the pricing of new incoming ones? It will most likely be expensive.

If you go with 8400, throw away cooler, stock is enough. cheapest Z370 MB is enough. CX is OK, but I will get a better one, also 550 allows potential upgrades.
