Hello.

Some time ago I've read that Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 will not support Ryzen and Skylake, that will also means that ALL the processors that uses the AM4 socket doesn't have support on Windows 8.1, like the A or Athlon series?.

I've searched on the net about this, but I only find things about Ryzen and Skylike, nothing about other processors for the AM4 socket.

Hello, thanks for the response.

There are A and Athlon processors for the AM4 socket, one example of this is the AMD A8-9600.

The AM4 APUs like the one you listed are unsupported too, as well as the Ryzen CPUs. This means that Microsoft will block all Windows Updates as soon as it detects such a CPU on a Win 7/8/8.1 system.

You can install those OSes on a AM4 system, but it is unsafe to use it online once you do.

Unsupported doesn't mean "it will not work". Ryzen doesn't support Windows 7 but you can run Windows 7 on Ryzen although some workarounds may be needed if you hit any snags. If you are going up to AM4, you should just assume that only Windows 10 is "supported", the same goes for Skylake/Coffee lake/whatever Lake.

Not supported means there is no guarantee that you will be able to run an OS that isn't Windows 10 without any hitches. This also means you may have issues with chipset drivers/USB drivers not being available from your AM4 motherboard maker for your specific OS (Windows 7, 8, 8.1). AM4 chips also don't say Linux is supported but most of the time it works; it's just there is no guarentee as in it's not AMD's/motherboard maker's fault if it doesn't.

It not unsafe at all just expect possible issues during OS installation. USB drivers are another big hitch with trying to do Windows 7 and Ryzen as well.

I see, I was about to buy a system based on AM4, but now I think I will buy one based on FM2+, thanks for the info!.

I've searched info about the things that you pointed out, and is like a gamble; apart the update blocking detail that ZRace mentioned, you have to add the chipset/USB problems, I think that I will try to buy a FM2+ based-system.

With that said, I appreciate both responses, I have obtained the information I needed. Many thanks.

In the end I decided to go for the FM2+/ Windows 8.1 configuration, thanks anyway for the response.

Regards.

I think that's probably the worst possible choice of all the ones available. Going to a dead socket with no upgrade path and weak performance and buying RAM that will never be compatible with any signfiicant upgrade, just to avoid Windows 10, strikes me as a rather short-sighted decision. If you don't go to Linux, you're going to be at 10 sooner or later.

You are right, and what you say is reasonable, but I already had one brand new Windows 8.1 disc and license since some years ago, and I didn't have much money even for a Windows 10 disc because I have to buy a complete system, screen included. Besides that, you can't use Windows Update in W7, 8 or 8.1 with a Ryzen/Skylake (or newer) processor, and seeing the current situation, I think that I prefer to have Windows update just in case.

Speaking about Linux, I've already been trying some distros and is a very serious possibility the fact that I will use it, or at least a dual boot configuration.

Regards.
