Ok. Let me start this off by saying i am in no way and computer god but i do know what im doing sort of? ;/
I pay for 25-30 down and 10 up but i have always had good ping however only got 2-3mb download. But i have no complained as its never been too much of an issue for me..

However i have recently started to get some very severe lag issues in reguards to ping. I can be on 18ping and all of a sudden i will shoot to 4000-5000ping and i have never been able to stop it, only thing i have done is wait it out for hour or so and it stops. However within the last week or two it hasnt stopped, and it doesnt stop. I feel like i have tried everything, internet provider and they seem to not know what the issue is, guiding me through steps which are very wierd but none of them work.. For example, wireless channels, fac resets, ect. Some of them used to work for a day or two, but none work now and im really stuck on what to do. All of the lag only seems to usually effect my PC, so i have brought a wireless extender, worked for the first day, then stopped again. Only thing i can think of i have not done is brought a new ethernet adapter which i will be prepared to do if you guys think i should, and a new wifi modem.. And the new wifi modem is coming tomorrow but i dont have any hope for it... Anyone know anything, im clueless of what to do next. Any questions i will reply asap..

Thanks

Okay that helps a lot. It was not a fluke your problem is the wireless signal and extenders are worthless.

Wireless is inherently unstable and affected by many other signals (other networks and other devices -- a list too long to mention). So while it is generally okay for light use if frequently folds under latency dependent (gaming) or bandwidth dependent (video streaming) applications.

The best solution is not to spend more for wireless components because they won't cure the problem. Most wireless radio tests are done extremely close to the source router and with little or no intervening matter other than air.

I would recommend that you instead buy a pair of quality AV2-1000/1200 powerline adapters. HERE is a list...

Attach one next to the router and plug its Ethernet cable into a LAN port and the plug the other adapter in your room near your computer (not on a power strip or UPS though) and run the Ethernet cable to your computer.

If you also want wireless in your room you have a couple choices -- you can add a cheap wireless router setup as an AP in your room (still use the wired connection by attaching to one of the 3 free LAN ports as the PL adapter will use one of them) or set up your computer's wireless adapter as an ad hoc wireless access point using ICS (Internet connection sharing). If you want a more robust wireless network upstairs run Connectify on your computer instead of using ICS.
