A while ago I built a new system for someone who bought new parts with his bootable HDD unformatted.

When i turned the PC on it booted into his old Windows 10 before i built his system and I was dumbfounded. Will this also work for me?? However i believe not as I am going from intel to AMD.

How do I go about using my own copy of windows 10 to my new system? This is from the Windows 8.1 upgrade to Windows 10 pro.

If your previous Windows licence was a retail licence (as opposed to an OEM licence), then you can port it from one system to another.

I had a Windows 8.1 Retail licence on my old machine, which I had upgraded to Windows 10 with the free upgrade path. When I built my next machine and installed Windows 10, I activated Windows 10 with the original Windows 8.1 product key. Microsoft activation servers take care of the rest.

If your previous licence is OEM, you're probably going to need a new licence.
Unfortunately the free 8.1 to 10 upgrade path was strictly one time for that particular system (like OEM OS installs). If you change the system components (MB/CPU), you'll need to buy Windows 10.
It's always best to perform a clean install when upgrading the MB/CPU. Even if it did work I wouldn't be surprised if your Windows 10 became 'unlicensed' when it got around to checking your hardware hash against the license.
