Backup Hard Drive holds "Raw" files/information

Hey guys,

I'm freaking out a little bit because I backed up my SSD on an external hard drive a while ago and now I can't access my data on my laptop. I wanted to make sure that I backed up everything on my SSD before wiping it so that I could re-use it, but now it's telling me to re-format my external hard drive because the data is "raw." I really don't want to do this because I have my backed up SSD data on that and I'm about to wipe my SSD so that I can re-install everything.

Also I can't just put my SSD back into my computer that it was initially with because I'm not physically with it. Would it be alright if I connected my SSD to a brand new computer that I'm currently building? Would it mess anything up?

(In other words, how do I recover my data from raw data on my external hard drive. I'm currently trying to use the Minitool Power Data Recovery software).

Please help! I don't know what to do.

What program did you use to create the backup? Also, what type of backup (image, image file, etc.)?
You could add the SSD as a secondary drive on another computer and should be able to access all the data on it without messing up the other computer.

I just did a manual backup. Like literally, I just dragged and dropped my files and folders onto the external hard drive for the data that I wanted to save.

On another forum, some people said that if you plug the SSD from one computer into another, it'll mess up either the hard drive or the computer and I don't want either of those. Although it would be worse if it screwed up my computer.

The problem is that I would love to use the SSD as my boot-up hard drive, but unfortunately, it has all of the data that I want to keep and put it on my new computer.

It sounds like the files never made it or something happened to the drive in the interim. Were you able to view these files on the backup drive while it was attached to your other computer?

I guess there is a chance. Previously it happened when they were both OS drives and the system (back in the XP days) would mistakenly try to boot from the other (secondary) drive and completely mess up the OS. However, you aren't going to be booting from this SSD in the original computer, ever again, right? In that case you should be fine. Just make sure the boot order has this SSD drive lower in the boot process in BIOS (below your current boot drive) and you should be fine.

Something occurred within the backup drive to make my data turn into RAW data, but I have no idea what could've caused it. Yes, I was able to view these files on the backup drive while attached to my other computer.

Yeah, I don't plan on booting from this SSD in the original computer since I plan on using it as a bootable drive in my new computer. However, that being said, I also don't really wanna run the risk of screwing up my new computer because of my SSD that was originally meant for my original computer. If I boot from another hard drive, you're saying that I'll be able to view the files on my SSD if my SSD is the secondary drive? Will my SSD in this case turn into a read-only disk? If so, that's good right? Because then there's no way for me to mess around with it. I can only copy and paste files from the SSD onto my new bootable drive which is definitely something that I would want.

Yeah I was actually looking at a USB SATA adapter just now.

I'll probably do that as a last resort solution. If the recovery program doesn't work, then I'll have resort to that.

Thanks for everything dude! It was very helpful.
