Hello.

I recently picked up a NEC 6030H notebook with Windows 98 installed on it for free off of Craigslist. I am planning to use this computer for MS-DOS gaming. I have a decent collection of old dos flight and space sim games like wing commander, lhx attack chopper, aces over europe, ect..

Now here is my dilemma

I want to use a joystick to play these games and I already have a Logitech wingman attack. This particular joystick uses the typical old 15pin game port connector, but the NEC notebook doesn't have a 15pin connector and it also doesn't have any usb ports.

After doing a little research I was able to come up with a solution that might work, but before I order anything I would just like some conformation that this is even possible.

My plan is to use a pcmcia card like this

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002L5YFXA/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1515614457&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=pcmcia+usb&dpPl=1&dpID=41%2Bha3YYpjL&ref=plSrch

And a 15pin to usb game port adapter like this

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004HAX7OU/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515614640&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=game+port+to+usb

Will this even work?

Is there a better way of doing it?

No worries.

Trying to find some more info on the hardware, but given it's from ~95, it's proving a little tough.

I can't think of any obvious reason to believe your idea wouldn't work (assuming driver support etc), but it's a little tough to say definitively (or even whether there's an easier/better route) without detailed spec/teardowns/reviews etc which, given it's age, are hard to come by.

Thanks for your efforts Barty

I can only give you the basic specs of the computer which are

CPU 133MHz Intel Pentium
Ram 16mb
OS win98 first edition

I really think it will work. My biggest concern is trying to use this setup with dos games. Seeing as how MS-Dos never had usb support I think there is going to be an issue

@alabacho

That's what I was afraid of.

I wasn't sure if the usb support would carry over to dos seeing as how Win9x runs inside of dos.

I know they make a pcmcia gameport adaptor card, but I cannot find one for sale. I've googled it and looked on eBay, Amazon, ect.. Does anyone know where I couldn't get a pcmcia gameport card?

Hi all.

I came too late.

dy26197, I think there is a better way ... through a hard way !

This one:

8yxeac.jpg

Documentation: NEC Versa Docking Station 6000

With a MIDI GAME PORT (15 Pin) or DB-15 included, just what your Logitech Wingman Attack needs.

... or:

ztb23a.jpg

Documentation: NEC Versa MiniDock 6000

The datasheet relates it to NEC Versa 6050/6060 thru 6200 models, but I remember reading that it works perfectly with the first 6000 series (6000H, 6010H, 6030H, 6030X) and the NEC Versa expansion port. Includes DB-15 and USB (!) ports.

And the NEC Port Replicator Bar 6000. No DB-15 in this case.

- Please, confirm before searching that I'm not totally wrong -

The NEC Versa Docking Stations 6000 are (very) rare and (very) hard to find hunting pieces. Good luck !

Greets from Spain.

Pep.

PS1. Sorry about my poor English :D

PS2. Be careful ! There are models like the NEC Docking Station Plus or the NEC Docking Station II that are very similar to the NEC Versa Docking Station 6000, but I think they are not compatible with your notebook.

PS3. PCMCIA ? ... look for New Media PCMCIA Basic Game Port (?)
