Evening!

I just received a new cpu, mobo, ram, and psu. I've installed everything but when I hit the power switch everything lights up and turns off for half a second then goes off.

I've bread boarded with just the minimums, psu, cpu, ram, mobo. What I've noticed is that if I boot everything up without a cpu in the socket, everything lights up like normal. Once I install the cpu in the socket, it only boots up for half a second then instantly turns off. Is it possible I've done something to kill the cpu, is it that easy to do that to a brand new cpu? The light on the mobo that correlates to cpu fail/not detected flickers.

Parts:
Mobo: MSI H270
CPU: Intel i8600k
650 W Thermaltake PSU

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Solution
Well the reason you're having problems is the CPU and motherboard aren't compatible. While the i5 8600k is an LGA 1151 CPU, it only works with 300 series chipset motherboards, eg. Z370. H270 boards only allow up to 7th generation CPUs like the i5 7600k or i7 7700k.

Get a Z370 motherboard if you want to use the 8600k, the cheaper 300 series chipset boards aren't out yet.
