Hi guys, new to the forum.

This is my first-ever build, and the main purpose is to run simulations (Mainly X-Plane 11, FSX)and games (GTA V), and some photo-editing work, would prefer to overclock my memory, CPU and my GPU.

My budget is under 1000 CAD, and here are my parts right now, btw, I prefer NOT buy components online, as my dad is paying for this project, he doesn't want to risk it.

Ryzen 5 1600---269.99
ValueRAM 8GB DDR4-2400MHz---109.99 (or kijiji 50 dollar DDR4 2133 RAM, 50 dollars from a prebuilt PC)
MSI B350M GAMING PRO---109.99
EVGA GTX 1060 6GB---325 (kijiji, used for several month)
Cooler Master 600W PSU---59.99
1TB BarraCuda HDD---59.99(Will add a SSD later on)
CASE---free

total around 940 bucks, what do you guys think? Should I go for the cheaper RAM? And should I go for the GTX 1060 3GB and add some more stick of RAM? Thanks for your help!

Solution
I use a 1060 3gb and play eve online, war thunder and call of duty world war II just to name a few all at high to maximum settings at 1920x1080 with no problems. even with only 3gb of ram, you're still getting roughly GTX 980 performance. The only real instance where the 6gb is the better choice of the two is if you were running a 2560x1440 resolution or VR, but at that point you'd still have to turn settings down and would be better off with a GTX 1070 instead
Overclocking, successfully, generally requires components which are useful for that purpose. You want the fast ram, not the slow ram, for example. You could use the slower ram, but that is kind of against the idea of overclocking in order to squeeze out extra performance. You want a good power supply, not just a 'good enough' power supply.

In order to stretch the budget, I'd go with the 3gb 1060. Apply the saved money to getting fast overclocker friendly ram, 8gb to start with(ram is costly). What else can you get instead of the Cooler Master power supply for the same money? EVGA? Seasonic? Don't worry about the SSD right now.

Thank you sir for the quick reply, appreciated! Okay then, I can get a GTX 1060 3GB on kijiji for around 240 bucks, just saying though, I am also open to any other good GPU options in last gen, like the 9xx and 7xx.

How much watts would I need for a good overclock? would 650-700 be enough? I don't really care about the each brand, for a 700 watts PSU, I found a thermalstake Smart White Series priced at 74.99

Also, on the MOB the supported RAM is 2400, so would going any higher then 2400 help? If does, I found a 3200 MHz RAM stick at 149.99.

get the 2133 ram, intel cpu are not affected as much as ryzen is when it comes to speed

Hi! I am just wondering how bad would the kernel memory leak issue affect the eight generation intel processor? And would you recommend the GTX 1060 6GB or the 3GB? Would I be anyhow BCLK overclock the CPU?

Btw, there won't be any ASrock motherboard in stock at my local store (Memoryexpress), so would the cheapest Z370 MOB work, the MSI one? Thanks guys for you help! Appreciated, this is for my science fair project too :)

that i5 system wouldn't be a bad choice either, just keep in mind you will not be able to overclock it unless you spring for an i5 8600K as the non-k models are multiplier locked. You also need a good power supply. coolermaster/thermaltake psu's that come bundled with cases are generally very poor quality and could shorten the life of your components. Never skimp on the psu! It is the cornerstone of every computer and often is overlooked. go with a seasonic or corsair unit like the one maxalge recommended.

Right! Thank you sir! I do know that the i5-8400 is a locked processor, but I am fine with that as the budget does not really limit me go up higher, and I will look into a better PSU maybe by EVGA or corsair, how many watts would I need for a good overclock on my RAM and GPU? Would 600 watts work?

We might have a little bit over budget but that fine with me.

550-650w would be more than plenty and provide headroom for a more powerful gpu in the future. Just to give you a little perspective on what a good PSU will do for you, I currently have a Corsair TX750 that I purchased 9 years ago that has been in 3 different overclocked systems, survived 2 ended relationships and my current one and its still going strong in my overclocked R7 1700 system. computer components and girlfriends may change, but that psu hasnt xD

I would take a good hard look at a Seasonic Focus Gold 550. Jonnyguru reviewed the Focus Gold Plus 550 HERE and it was found to be excellent. The only thing you'd be giving up by going with the non plus model is full modularity and a 7 year warranty vs a 10 year warranty. In fact, if I were to have to replace my TX 750, i'd go with the Seasonic Focus Gold series

That is indeed a good PSU! But unfortunately we do not have that in stock. I checked around and found this: Corsair CX 550 by corsair, it seems to be okay, what do you think?

Keep in mind the budget is under 1000 CAD :)

Here's an intel build for $922 CAD before a $10 mail in rebate. gives you about $80 CAD to play around with (do you need a windows 10 activation?)
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Gn7djc

That set up will give you plenty of room to grow and will be able to play most if not all games with high settings at 1920x1080 resolution.

Alternatively if you need to step down further, you can go with an evga GTX 1050Ti and the system will be around $852 CAD
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/hRk7D8

Same core system, but you'd be ~$150 CAD under budget. Would have to turn down some graphical settings but should still provide medium to high settings at 1920x1080 depending on the game

Thank you! That looks great!

Only question here is, should I go with the GTX 1060 3GB or the 6GB, is the GTX 1060 6GB worth THAT much more???

After that, I'll be all set to go, thanks for your quick replies! As I am really new on PC building, I really don't want to take any chance of buying the wrong components/not sufficient enough. XD
