I've got a corsair vs 450W psu and I'm going to buy my friends gtx 970 which recommends a 500W psu so I was wondering if the psu breaks somehow due to low quality, etc. what damage could the psu do to other components? My build shouldn't draw more than 330W according to PcPartPicker

My Specs.
Cpu. Amd x4 Athlon 870k OC
gpu. asus gtx 750 ti oc + OC
ram. Kingston HyperX 1x8Gb 1600Mhz
ssd. Kingston HyperX Fury 480gb
MoBo. Asus A88XM-E
cooler. Cryorig M9A
PSU. Corsair VS 450W

Lets stop with the over dramatization. The VS is probably the best, most affordable unit available to over a billion people. Europe may have better choices for the price but much of Asia including India do not. It's a hell of a lot better than the iBall and other local crap most of our newer Indian users have. The VS is 220VAC and isn't sold in North America.

I wouldn't use it in an overclocked, higher end rig because it's not a higher end part. Will it power a GTX 970/870K? Yes.

The VS 450w is FINE for those specs. While it's a lower end unit by Corsair's standards it's still better than most OEM power supplies that come with prebuilt systems and power supplies that come with cases. It's not a great choice for an overclocked gaming system but it's not going to break your computer.

Can't recommend the CX550M.

Hooking up a GTX 970 to it....

You never know.

I would replace it with a TX550M at min from Corsair.

I don't recommend anything from Corsair under the RMX series however, the TXm is normally fine.

Since you already have it use it. Not the best quality but should work with what you have. Their 1,000's of people using them.
Anytime a power supply fails their a chance it can damage other parts.

Very little chance.

Corsair VS series is tier 5 in some lists. Personally, I would not use one if it were free.

Total failure is not the only way things can be damaged. PSU with fluctuating voltages put much more stress on system components. Use a multimeter and you might be amazed. A better quality power supply will help your system last longer in most cases.
