Hi I don't know if I'm in the right place. I don't know much about hard drives and was looking for some advice. I am helping a friend with his CCTV and the hard drive has died. The one I took out of the cctv was a Seagate pipeline HD .2 st31000322cs and I don't seem to be able to find a new one can anyone recommend a replacement drive please it's to go on a ray sharp CCTV system. Thanks in advance

Solution
We do have a line of hard drives specifically designed for CCTV, DVR, and NVR use called Seagate SkyHawk. Video uses like CCTV require a lot of writing on the hard drive, to manage massive streams of highly detailed video, and so these drives are engineered to do that well and prioritize writing so that you don't have frame drops or the video quality doesn't suffer. The drive you mentioned is a 1TB drive, if you're looking to replace it with another 1TB drive, the SkyHawk 1TB model is ST1000VX005. If you'd like to go bigger, you can find the different model numbers in the spec sheet at the link given by capacity.

Ok thank you just for when my friend asks is that the only hard drive that would work or is that the best one you recommend for cctv

Other hard drives will work too. You are definitely not by any means REQUIRED to use a drive specifically engineered for CCTV. It's like taking a car to a racetrack. No, you're not technically required to have a sports car to be physically capable of navigating the track. You could technically do it in a minivan. It's just that certain cars are specifically designed with the racetrack in mind, so they work better and more efficiently for it. Most systems like the CCTV device tend to connect using a universal standard called SATA, so any SATA hard drive should in theory work in the system. The other widely used standard is called SAS.

Here is a video on choosing the right drive for the right application if you'd like to check it out.
