Hi, I was wondering if any x3400 series Xeons will work in my Dell Optiplex 980 SFF, specifically the X3430. It's the same socket and TDP is fine, it's a matter of BIOS compatibility.

Solution
Doubtful. Normally vendors gear Xeons towards their server motherboards not standard desktop boards, because so even if its the same socket and power compatible. If the BIOS update doesn't include support for the chip. It wont work.

HP's site doesn't really have patch notes for BIOS updates so I can't find a list of CPUs that are compatible with that BIOS. However.

On the tech guide on page 47. It does not list any Xeon compatible chips.
