What in the world is going on with my temps? [FX - 8350 cpu _ MSI 970a GPC mobo]

I'm using the stock cooler for the fx 8350. My case is the HAF cooler master 912. All of my non used cables are tied up in the back.

I just upgraded my motherboard to the msi 970a gaming pro carbon (one that can actually run my fx-8350 fully), but the temps have been insane when it starts getting to work. Idle temps are fine. CPU will be at 20 - 30.

Here are some things I went through.

The first time I put in the mobo, cpu, and cooler. I ran a project on FL studio just to test things. No lag while running this FL project like I used to get with my old board, but the temp of my mobo and cpu as seen on speccy, core temp, and AMD Overdrive seemed much to high. (Though I didn't really check my temps until I put in this new mobo) All of the readings from the 3 programs line up with each other.

After playing a project that would lag with my old mobo for about a minute, my mobo temp would be at like 79-81 while my cpu temp would be at 69/70

I realized maybe my temps could be higher than normal because I didn't screw on the cpu cooler holder tight enough, and therefore the cpu cooler might have been loose. Lo and behold, it was loose. So I took it off, cleaned off the thermal paste from the cpu and the cooler, and put it back on tight this time. (It is notoriously hard to strap on the fx stock cooler to the MSI motherboard, so I loosen some of the screws on the plastic component that you lock to the cooler to in order to make it easier to strap on.)

After I finished that, I tried playing that project on FL again for a minute and my temps were even hotter. 84/85 degrees for my mobo, 73/75 for my CPU... Ok so I figured maybe I shifted around the cooler too much on the CPU as I was trying to strap in on and it may have messed up the thermal paste application somehow.

So I reaaplied thermal paste again, put on the cooler better, and now when I load up the project in FL, my mobo temp is at 81 and cpu temo at 73 before I even play the project! That did not happen before. Before this (yes I am cleaning off the paste well each time btw) when I would load up the FL project, before actually playing it my mobo temp would be at like 55-65 and CPU temp would be around 50...

I have no idea what's going on. I've read the fx - 8350 is a hotter chip in general at 125 TDP, and is recocmended that I get an aftermarket cooler like the hyper 212 evo, but should my stuff have been THAT hot in the first place? My fans seem to work fine, and they adjust to the increased temps. And the fact that my temps have gotten worse every time I've tried to put on my cooler again... Any idea of what is going on or what I'm doing wrong, and how to go about fixing this?

When Speccy says my mobo is at 80 and CPU at 69/70, this is what AMD Overdrive says

Speccy and other programs line up with the thermal margins in the sense that when they say my CPU temp is 70, the thermal margins on AMD Overdrive will be at 0.

The intensive part of the FL project I've been running to look at my temps doesn't get to 100% load. This is about the highest it got when I tried it right now.

You can see the CPU clock speed on the bottom right. There was no dropping to 1.4 throughout.

Also for some reason when I opened that specific project on FL, this box popped up which I had never seen happen before. Dunno what that means.

I can see a couple cores at 1400; since the CPU is not very busy, most cores still try to run at 4100 MHz. Since not all cores are throttled, the CPU cooler is the issue. The thermal margins are only 1.1 at idle; that's awfully bad. What cooler did you install? The stock cooler included with the FX-8350?

I didn't say it was 1.1 at idle. My idle temps are normal. I was just showing that as an example of how Speccy lines up with AMD Overdrive's margin readings.

I used the stock cooler.

You mean the AMD Overdrive screens are not from your system? One screen shows 1.1 thermal margins at very low CPU utilization and that isn't normal. If your thermal margins at idle are less than 35-40°C at idle, then the cooler is not installed correctly (too little or too much thermal paste).

Maybe slighlty more than a rice grain but from what I've seen, "too much paste" isn't a problem until it starts seeping off the sides.

I think I may have solved the issue for now though after doing some research. I've seen some comments suggesting that the FX 8350 does not always need the amount of votage that the BIOS automatically sets for it.

So I lessened it and my temps dropped SIGNIFICANTLY. No more -10 margins. Goes to 22-18 max when doing the things I need to do now. What I did was lower the voltage going to my CPU. (As you can see in the pic below with the "[-0.100000 V]")

My project files will get more complicated as they go on, so possibly I might need higher voltage later on, but I dunno. My CPU runs at its stock clock speed stabley and now without getting hot as hell.

Thanks though! I appreciate the assistance!

eh i went to more complicated projects and it still heats up the more and more complicated it gets, it's just like 20 degrees behind how it was before... So this will still be a problem, just not AS much so soon. So at least I should be able to work on some stuff while a new cooler comes in. gonna get the 212 cooler master evo
