Hi there everyone. I am not the most computer savvy guy so please bear with me.

A handful of years ago I was a foolhardy early twenties guy building my first pc and I went over budget and foolishly pirated windows. A mistake I have regretted since. On top of that windows detected the fraudulent software and rather then doing the smart thing and purchasing a key I downloaded a program to hide it further from Windows.

Well long story short I am guessing this program probably loaded my pc with a virus or something and after being turned off for nearly a year I recently booted it up to see that it will not allow me to boot the os at all anymore.

I plan on buying a new os within the month but before installing I would like to be certain my drives are cleared up and safe from viruses and the like.

My question is how do i go about ensuring there are no viruses on the drives before installing a new Windows software?

On a side note if i lost my motherboard boot disk can I just get a key of sorts from their website and load it on to a USB drive to replace the required disk?

Also if this is not the correct board forgive me and if possible please move this post to the correct board. I was honestly not sure where to post this question.

Solution
you will need to get a Windows installer to help you repair it. you can go to the site below and follow instructions there. prepare a usb drive (at least 8GB) or write into a DVD with the ISO file.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-download/windows10

you can go on ahead and do the install without the license key. backup your data to another drive. or you can just buy a new harddrive. attach only that to your mobo sata port. press F2/DEL go to boot menu and select USB/DVD. start with the install. delete all partitions (if you are using the old drive). it will auto restart to your OS drive prompting you to create your account. login. shutdown.

you can hook in the drive with your data. boot. download malwarebytes. do a full scan...

when you get your windows key. go to settings (press winkey+i). update & security. activation. just follow the on screen instructions there. it will prompt you to enter. and done. windows is activated.

as for the "motherboard disk". just google the name of your motherboard and go to their support site. it will have a list of all the necessary drivers/BIOS updates that you may need for your system.
