Hi,

There isn't a Sub Hardware forum for USB - and this could well be a software issue for all i'm aware so i'm posting it here, if not correct please forgive me :)

I have an issue with my USB 3.0 ports not recognising my "kingston dt r3.0 g2" when trying to use the usb 3 ports on the Front I/O.

However, when i connect a usb 2 to the ports on the front I/O windows picks them up fine.

If I connect my Kingston 3.0 usb to the USB 3 ports on the back (directly) windows picks it up fine! So I know that my Kingston 3.0 thumb drive is functional and is working.

I'm now really struggling to figure out why it is refusing to work on the Front USB 3.0 I/O ports.

Any one have any idea?

Using USB 3.0 ports on motherboard at rear of PC to connect internally to front I/O Female usb 3.0 headers. (These are the cables i'm using https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00P0E39CM)

Below is the hardware involved:
MSI Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z97-GAMING-5.html
Case: Coolermaster HAF-X: http://www.coolermaster.com/case/full-tower/haf-x/
USB 3.0 extension cables: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00P0E39CM

[OS = Windows 10]

Many thanks.

Solution
Despite Device manager not reporting any issues with the Drivers for the USB 3.0 on the chipset, I overlooked this.

For anyone else having same issues as mine, just download following drivers from intel:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20775/Intel-Chipset-Device-Software-INF-Update-Utility-?product=82012

Note: This update will only support the following Chipsets:
Intel® Z97 Chipset
Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility
Mobile Intel® QM170 Chipset
Mobile Intel® HM170 Chipset
Intel® Q150 Chipset
Intel® B150 Chipset
Intel® Z270 Chipset
Intel® Q250 Chipset
Intel® X299 Chipset
Intel® Q170 Chipset
Intel® Z170 Chipset
Mobile Intel® CM238 Chipset
Intel® H270 Chipset
Mobile Intel® QM175 Chipset
Intel® B250 Chipset
Intel® H97...
Front USB 3.0 ports get connected to
internal motherboard header: USB 3.0 connector (supports additional 2 USB 3.0 ports)

Installation Guide page 9 - says you can skip this step at top
Adaptor for changing internal usb to external usb - this also does not need to be used

Although the way you have connected it should also work, the proper way to connect it is to the motherboard internal header without the adapter. You may have the connectors misaligned.

Hi thanks for replying! :)

I see, I think I did get a cable to connect the front USB 3.0 Ports to the motherboard with a special USB male to header connector with the case, but must have gotten rid of it by mistake!

From Amazon I can find this; https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005LDY0SO will this work do you think, in conjunction with the current cables I already have(Using Motherboard pins)?

========= EDIT

So, I ordered the above cable i linked to Amazon - It arrived installed it and hooked up the front IO ports to it, and got the exact same result as I did using the back USB 3.0 ports. (USB2.0 got recognised but when using my USB3.0 never even recognises it.)

Any idea's as to what could be going on here?? :(
