Connecting 2 gateways

Hi all,

I have been searching the web for a few days and I haven't really found the answer I'm looking for, unless I am interpreting incorrectly.

Basic info :

Window 7
Netgear N600 C3700 (Main Gateway)
Motorola SBG6580
Limited network experience

Ok, I have my Netgear upstairs on a wired connection to my PC and also providing wireless connection to all of my devices. I am trying to get a wired connection to a lower floor without running a cable from Gateway to Gateway.

Is it possible to set up a connection so the Motorola RECEIVES a wireless signal FROM the Netgear to the Motorola, which can then provide a wired connection to a device downstairs.

I don't need the Motorola to broadcast a wireless signal, just receive one. I still want to use the wireless signal from the Netgear.

I don't think this is possible. Is there a way for me to get an internet connection downstairs without running a cable from floor to floor.

Thanks

The C3700 doesn't support repeater mode, and bridge mode on the SBG6580 isn't going to help since the C3700 is also a modem. Modems aren't usually configured with firmware allowing them to be used in repeater/access point mode. Standalone wifi routers are. But you have two modem/routers, so it doesn't seem possible.

What you can do instead with your old modem/routers is get a pair of MoCA Ethernet over coax adapters (support up to 1 Gbps if you get bonded MoCA 2.0), or powerline adapters. You'd need only one modem/router for that.

Also, keep in mind that both of those modem/routers can't do 802.11ac, and are limited to 2x2 MIMO. The maximum Phy rate is 300 Mbps, versus 6933 Mbps with 802.11ac and 9608 Mbps with 802.11ax. So don't expect to do much HD or 4K streaming.

Well I wouldn't be able to use the MoCA adapter because there isn't coax line run anywhere down there.

I was trying to see if there was a way I could do this without purchasing any new equipment. Would the powerline adapters be able to connect from my gateway wirelessly?

Basically I'm looking for a way to not have to run any sort of wiring down there.

Would something like a wifi extender work?

Some powerline adapters, like the Netgear XWN5001, are also routers, and include WPS based setup to clone your main router's SSID. You'd need the electrical outlet near your router and the one wherever you'd put the second powerline adapter to connect through the same breaker box.

A range extender may work, depending on the building materials in your house and the signal lost over the air, but would cut your throughput by 50% or more.

Ok just watched a quick video on a powerline adapters. I think this may be a solution to my problem.

If anyone has experience with powerline adapters can you please confirm if they outlets have to be on the same "breaker" or just the same "panel". The downstairs outlets do not share any breakers with an upstairs outlet.

A WPS isnt a big deal for me since the N600 gives me full wifi down there already, I just need a way to be wired down there.

Every house wiring is different.
Buy somewhere with a strong return policy, like Amazon.
If it works, great. If it doesn't, you have 30 days to send it back.

I know for a fact none of the outlets downstairs share a circuit with upstairs.

I guess I'm going to have to pay someone to run some wires/cabling downstairs
