1070s and 1080s gone everywhere?

I'll start by saying I got my year end bonus and was pretty excited to get a new graphics card today. Had the EVGA 1070Ti bookmarked and was only expecting to pay 500-600ish. To my dismay however it was out of stock so I figured no big deal there will be another one available from asus or whomever. Turns out almost everything is gone everywhere. Even checked with Best Buy. Online they are virtually gone and the ones that are in stock are going for about as much as a 1080 normally would. Been kind of out of the loop with tech the last couple years with work and what not so I'm kind of diving back into it. Basically what I'm wondering is if there's another mining boost going on again. Would love a reply and any insights. Thanks.

Well, I got lucky. Picked up a EVGA 1070 FTW from a local place. They had it going for 500. Figured why not, it's probably gonna be awhile before anyone gets anything back in stock.
