Hi can someone help me understand the importance of cores and GHZ in processors. When looking at buying processors what should i look for? more cores with less GHz or less cores with more GHZ? My example is the INTEL CORE I7 7700K VS I7 8700K. Can someone help me understand which is more important when gaming with the 1080 gtx graphics card and playing games like RUST and SPACE ENGINEERS.
UPDATE: This post has gone from my question to shopping metaphors?

Solution

simple, refer to shopping.

cores = number of people carrying your shopping home from the store.
GHz = how fast those people can run home.
cache = how big the shopping bags are.

games are like babies, they demand stuff NOW (fast) so GHz is usually better.
twitch streaming is like your mum/dad/cook, wants all the stuff on the table ready to prepare. so cores usually better.

Until you try streaming while gaming and then the 8700 is MUCH faster. If you are simply gaming I agree that the 7700K is a great chip to get right now. But if you are streaming or recording your game play at the same time the Ryzen 1600 or 8700 is going to work a lot better.

what an analogy :) i'm still working it out! :)

well, that's simply not true. Look at Tom's own review of the 8700k. Apart from one or two anomalies, the 8700k is faster at both stock and OC'ed.

I would agree, that the i7 7700k would be cheaper, but it's a poorer CPU. Specially if the OP has ideas about streaming. Tom's have a very interesting article on Gaming/Streaming CPU's: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/game-streaming-encoding-coffee-lake-ryzen,review-34144.html

The kabylake CPU's including the 7700k are found wanting.

bang on! :)

the 7700k is still a great gaming CPU, for pure gaming though. If you include streaming, which I don't myself, the 7700k is lacking compared to the 8700k and the R5 1600 and above. If you already have a Zxxx board then the 7700k is a viable option for a CPU upgrade, just obviously not upgrade-able beyond that.
Good choice not to buy it now. Okay, Coffee Lake is a little more expensive upgrade, but it's worth it for the extra performance.

shopping is the mother of all references.

the store is the hard drive, food is the data. your fridge is your ram. dinner is served (end result on screen).

you could exclaim that threading is like each person (core) carrying 2 bags instead of 1.

you're on a roll! :) keep 'em coming. What i want to know is, how did you get from shopping, to games being like babies, to serving up a meal with mom/dad/cook all throwing in!? I'm impressed by the linkage! :) Brilliant!!

well babies want food (and nappy changes) on demand, else they cry (fps drop), so you gotta fetch food pronto. pronto is speed, speed is GHz.

mum/dad/cook like being prepared and having everything on the table before beginning the cooking for you and twitch (like streaming wants to know what to show you and what to compress and pass on to twitch) and if its not all there, then both your food and the food passed onto twitch will be delayed (lags followed by fps drop). everything on table requires as much food returned from shop in a single visit, thats lots of people with lots of bags (cache x threads).

im just weirdly visualising it all in my messed up head.

seriously dude you've made my night! :) That's some crazy analogies going on, but bizarrely i get them all. You're visualising is rubbing off on me :) You should keep that mind of yours working on the imagery bro! Top class :)

On a side note, care to explain bottle-necking for me? And of course, I mean in your own inimitable way! :) Have a great evening bro, at least evening where I am (Dublin, Ireland!)

hdd bottle neck
now you got your shopping traveling from the store (hdd), if the store has small doors (old hhd) the people struggle to leave with the shopping.

cpu bottle neck
so all these people coming home with the shopping, cant supply the shopping faster than you can cook it, leaving you waiting for more deliveries.

gpu bottle neck
all the shopping coming home is being cooked as fast as it arrives, good! unfortunately, you cant eat it as fast as its coming out, so the table fills up, and with no more space, the cooking has to stop, waiting for you to clear some space before continuing to cook.

this is due to simulation of cpu as the fetching and cooking of food, the data being collected from store like shopping, and the presentation of the end result (graphics) as a finished plate to be eaten.

i'm a convert. I bow to your infinite wisdom, and superb analogies! :)

yes!
