Hiya, I’ve run into a little bit of a problem with one of my drives. It’s the boot drive for my desktop pc and it’s started to act up on me. Slow boot and shutdown times, programs launching/running slowly. Slow transfer rates etc. also a strange anomaly where the icons on my desktop and taskbar would turn into white “file” icons for a few seconds and then back to the icon they were set to. Anyways earlier this week I booted up my computer and it took a solid 10 minutes to load up the windows login screen. Once I finally got through that. My desktop was blank and every shortcut had to load in one by one for another 10 minutes. It took me about 5 hours to try and download and install macrium reflect in an attempt to clone my drive to an external so I could save my data. As my first instinct was the drive was dying out of no where. Though S.M.A.R.T says it’s in a perfectly ok condition. Could it be the SATA cable connecting it to the motherboard? I’ve yet to check because I’m out of town at the moment.
Also I was unable to clone the drive, using todo backup the operation wouldn’t progress at all. It was left on for roughly 12 hours.

Could it really be the SATA cable that is causing the problem? Or is the drive just on its way out? There was no hinting towards it giving out at all beforehand so this whole incident completely blindsided me. Any help is greatly appreciated!

You want to download Crystal Disk Info (if you haven't already), and look at the bad/reallocated/pending sector counts, as that should give you an indication.

To be honest, some slight hitches (e.g. icon taking 1s or so to refresh) are normal for a HDD, but the lockups, freezes, and slow progress aren't (unless it's very full and fragmented).
