Hello guys , so i have an old pc and I want to buy a new one but my parents don't allow that 'cause the one I wanna buy is too expensive , so i thought about buying A CPU and a new GPU for my old PC . My current cpu is i3-550 with 4 GB Ram and a Nvidia Geforce 310 . My motherboard is Dell Inc. 0C2KJT so it supports only CPU-s with socket lga 1156 and lga 1156 only supports first gen. cpu-s for i3/i5/i7 and i wanted to buy a i5-750 but i think it's not good enough then i thought about getting a i7-860 or 870 , and the last one is a bit better but not much but I also heard that the 860 one is overclockable and I saw someone that had overclocked it to 4.00GHz from 2.83GHz . So what do you think guys , what should i do ? Is i7-860 good for gaming nowadays , I only need it for medium-low graphic settings for the new games and around 720p in games like PUBG , Overwatch , BF 1/4 etc and in CSGO in 1080p .

ps im thinking on pairing it with a 1050/1050ti 2 gb and another 4 gb of ram

problem with this is that you're going to go and disturb a lot of things inside your case which are very old and brittle by now. There is a small chance to break something else while doing this swap of CPU. Although, you will be able to pull off your games on very low settings with that i7 upgrade along side with 1050ti, but you would also need more ram for sure... this now becomes an issue of, do you have 4x1gb sticks...? or 2x2gb? and how many avilable slots.... but in the end, if you are able to overclock the new i7 that you're gonna put in there, you'll get some more use out of the system and be able to play your planned games on low graphics. You could also have a look at youtube videos, of people running the same setup, to see...

I have a hard time justifying buying such old hardware because those chips already have low single threaded performance to begin with. Games love strong cores. You're rather limited. 4GB of ram and the GT 310 isn't going to cut it, especially for the games you want to play. Hard to give you suggestions since you're limited money wise and I don't know your budget.

No. These CPU's use a lot of power and get very warm, and unfortunately you won't be much better of than you were before. If you can find anything better for roughly the same price range on Ebay then you're better off with that. Also, for the games you want to play, that won't cut it.

this being said, it's a little unfortunate to invest on an old system, although, that's all you've got... you can make it work, but it'll take money which you won't get "back" in any way lets say.

although... this also leaves us at a big question (which is very important), which Power supply do you have? you may need to upgrade it, as well as, the motherboard, could you get the exact model of it? we need to make sure that it has enough power rating through the PCI-E slot to run a GTX1050ti, or if it doesn't then you'll need to upgrade your PSU 100% and get a graphics card that takes external power supply (from power supply directly)
