So I'm in the process of using FreeNAS for a file storage sorta thing. im using next cloud but really want to be able for friends to access it worldwide and upload and download file into folder etc. Any thoughts?

Solution
If ftp is setup correctly then someone could upload a video from Antarctica to his ftp server and a person at the north pole could download it, both of course using a satellite connection.

I'm not sure if we are allowed to ask for other people's public IP addresses on the forums.

You can check from your own house though.

Just go to another computer and type:

ftp://"local ip of computer setup as ftp server"

For me or anyone else on the Internet to connect to your ftp server we would need your public IP address, something like 68.123.123.123 and we would type ftp://68.123.123.123 or whatever your public IP is.

Assuming port forwarding of port 21 is forwarded to that ftp server on your router.
I use NAS4FREE but it should be similar.

Simple create a pool with your hard drives of choice.

Then create a dataset for each person that you want to have access to it.
(Don't forget compression and dedup if you need / have the hardware to do)

Create a user/password for each user and map them to their respective dataset.

Setup FTP and use a DDNS service such as www.noip.com to map your public IP to an easy to remember name i.e Tomhueb.ddns.net

I did a similar setup at my house.

My brother and sister each have their own logins for my nas for saving their files and they are restricted from seeing other people's files.

so im quite new to this. i have a dedicated server. how do i do this. like creating pool . also do u reccomend nas4free for this over freenas????

Freenas is more fully featured than NAS4FREE.

But NAS4FREE is much easier to setup.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/06/the-ars-nas-distribution-shootout-freenas-vs-nas4free/

Gives the differences between the two and how to set them both up for use.

When I started looking for a nas replacement about 2 years ago i came across NAS4FREE first.

Had I came across Freenas first I might be using it instead.

If you are just starting out id recommend starting with NAS4FREE then moving to Freenas if you need its specific features, like a domain controller ... which you probably don't need lol.

with the ftp . people say use filezilla but how do i use that ??? like do i have it running on another PC?

Filezilla can make a computer running Windows/maybe Mac/maybe Linux act like an ftp server once you have ports forwarded to the correct computer.

But you will be much happier starting off with nas4free if you can get a computer dedicated to this purpose.

okay so. if i stick with freenas. will i be able to link this to nextcloud and have pople acces the server on next cloud????

You can't install Next Cloud on either NAS4FREE or Freenas due to those operating systems not supporting Next Cloud.

But either Freenas or NAS4FREE can do the same thing as Next Cloud.

Freenas and NAS4FREE aren't just programs that you run in Windows they quite literally completely replace Windows with their own NAS operating system.

In fact most times Freenas and NAS4FREE are installed on a flash drive so that you don't take up a valuable sata port on the motherboard.

having trouble trying to login with user and password? So essentially can someone upload a file to my server (another user) and then download it again in another country?

okay, so I have set up the majority of stuff. so if someone wants to connect to me i have to give them my public ip or dynamic DNS? Also do public ips change as what i mean would they keep having to recconect to my server every so often

Public IP address do change unless you pay for a static one.

My asus router has a service with www.noip.com that reports the new IP address to noip.com whenever it changes.

That lets me login with my own personal ddns name that is always valid ... awesome1337.ddns.net (not my actual but you get the idea)
