Worth the upgrade? 4770K O.C x GTX1080Ti

Ok so I heard a lot that 1080Ti is a waste for 1080p gaming wich is my highest resolution atm, however, I've been thinking about moving into a 1440p G-synch monitor, 4k is really something that doesn't interest me at all at the moment.

Currently, i've got this 4770k running rock solid @ 4.4ghz 1.25v 24/7 along my GTX 980 non ti, I've been wondering if i'd get more out of my buck if I get either a 1080Ti or actually improve the system overall and get something like a 1080 non ti (surprisingly here, just not being Ti makes it 50% cheaper). Maybe new mobo/cpu combo, and then go for the TI in the future, i'm not so sure how well would my 4770k handle the 80Ti if i step up to 1440p

Solution
The lower the resolution the more demanding it is on the CPU actually. So the higher up you go, the less CPU resource's you need.

Definitely get the 1080 non ti if only at 1440P. I also have a GTX 1080 and a 1440P display and the both together feel like they we're designed for each other, I can play all games at ultra at 1440P while staying in the upper 80fps range.

I wouldn't bother (wasting my money) on 980Ti -> GTX 1080 upgrade. the performance difference is too small IMO.
My system is about the same as yours, and for 1440p gaming it's good.
I you want to see 144 FPS locked, get a 1080Ti.
there are also higher than 144Hz refresh rate monitors coming :)

He said non ti. Either way a GTX 980 is good enough for 1440p just not max settings and if you want more than 60 fps you're going to have to get a GTX 1080.

Ressurecting this thread a bit, so, I've got a good price on 1080, the Ti is a no go for me, way too expensive here. Regardless, as said before, I use a GTX 980 non ti, for 1080p, it really never met a challenge, even witcher 3 runs smoothly, but I do consider upping to 1440p MAX, I so no point in 4k or dual screens, or anything over 27" monitor. If i grab this 1080 non ti, will it keep up within any foreseeable future at these specs ?

The GTX 1080 is an excellent card at 1440p. You can use the GTX 1080 at 1440p Ultra settings for pretty much any game out there. The GTX 1080 can even play a lot of games at 4K medium to high settings. Some games like Battlefield 1 will even play in 4K Ultra settings with a GTX 1080. The GTX 1080 will do excellent at 1440p and your CPU shouldn't be an issue for the life of the card.
