Cloning system HD, and back again

Hi everyone,

A recently bought laptop is going back to the manufacturer to look at a faulty speaker. I would like to format the HD and reinstall windows to remove personal data etc, but I don't want to lose all my settings etc.

So my plan is to clone the HD, windows and all, to an external HD the day before I send it away and when it comes back, clone it back to the laptop from the external.

Is there any reason why this wouldn't work? Or anything I should have in mind re: Windows activation, drivers etc...?

Thanks in advance!

Cloining the whole HD to another HD should work just fine! I have done similar things via full imaging the partitions, however, your plan should work. Perhaps consider having the Verify On during the cloining operation to give you peace of mind.

Thanks, that's good to know. I am planning to use Acronis True Image, by "verify" do you mean that it checks the integrity of the image, for which there would be a setting in True Image? I suppose it takes longer that way but is more reliable?

Oh yes, the cloning will take a lot longer, because it verifies either during the clone or immediately afterwards, however, because it will be your only copy, verify on will give you peace of mind.
Let's just say that the cloning will be one less "worry" for you; hopefully all the hardware will cooperate all throughout this adventure.
