Hello fellow nerds on the internet. I'm looking to upgrade my build on the cheap, a process made difficult by all the cryptocurrency mining madness. My nerd skills are more in the field of chemistry, biology, and physics, so I need a more computer-centric nerd to lend me a bit of their expertise.

Current Build:
Core i5-3550 (LGA 1155)
Nvidia GTX 960 (2 gig model)
500w PSU
24 gigs RAM

This works fine for 1080p, but I'm looking up upgrade to 1440p (or 4k, but that's probably outside my budget). I know I'll need to get a new graphics card, but I'm also wondering about my CPU? The problem is, an upgrade here would probably require a new mobo as well since the one I currently use is an LGA 1155 socket, which I believe is incompatible with most newer CPUs.

I don't play many AAA games. I'll probably get Mass Effect Andromeda at some point, and I've been thinking about the Skyrim special edition since I never completed the original way back when I gamed on 360. I'm more interested in MMOs like Black Desert Online, Overwatch, Warframe, Ashes of Creation (if it ever comes out), ect. As long as I hit 60 fps (or close) I'm happy. The monitor I ordered is 60 hz anyway, so more than 60 fps goes to waste.

In my searching, a few options for graphics cards are frequently recommend like the RX 480, RX 580, GTX 1060. But some people say these cards are more for high fps 1080p gaming, not 1440p. Conflicting answers. I could possibly spring for a 1070, but only if it's absolutely necessary to get 60 fps on decent settings. Vega 56/64 and 1080/1080 ti are probably out of the question for me, especially with price inflation.

Another option would be to tough it out until new cards get released or the mining craze slows down, but I have no idea how long that'll be.

Preferred Budget:
$350 to $650, depending on what needs replacing. I'm a full time student, so dollar efficiency is a top concern.
