Hi All,

I'm strongly considering upgrading my computer this weekend. I generally play WoW, FortNite & Battlefield 1.

If I do the upgrade below, will I see a big improvement compared to my current build or will I be wasting money by upgrading?

My current build:

Current CPU: Intel Core i7-2700K Sandy Bridge (overclocked to 4.0 (temps run low but I get startup issues sometimes due to some sort of voltage issue)) https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115095

Current Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z68AP-D3(R2.0) LGA 1155 Intel Z68 = https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128538

Current GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB FTW+ GAMING w/ACX 2.0+ = https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487090

Current Ram: 16GB of G.SKILL Sniper Series (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 = https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231460

Current Cooler: CRYORIG H7 = https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4UF2DZ6565

Current PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3, 80+ GOLD, 650W Fully Modular = https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438094

Potential updated Build:

Upgraded CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K =

Same GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB FTW+ GAMING w/ACX 2.0+ = https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487090

Upgraded Ram: 16GB of G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 3200 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820232485

Same Cooler: CRYORIG H7 = https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4UF2DZ6565

Same PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3, 80+ GOLD, 650W Fully Modular = https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438094

Your new build is exactly like my son except he used Z370 AsRock and i7 8700 since he does not want to OC. He has been thinking of 1080Ti since he just got Dell 27" 1440p 144hz Gsync monitor recently but he wants to wait to see next next gen of 1080 first.

Cryorig H7 is good but I heard H5 is much better. You got 8700K so you may want to think about it. I guess you got H7 so use it first. If not good enough, upgrade it later.

Download MSI afterburner or use window task manager to monitor CPU/GPU usage. If either one runs at or near 100% consistently, then that one is bottleneck your system. I know i5 2500K (OC 4.2) is bottleneck GTX970 playing on 1080p. You have i7 2700K so it may be close or both are evenly matched. I know when my son upgrade to i7 8700, it is easily max out his GTX970

Thanks, I would eventually upgrade to a 1080 TI GPU so the 970 isn't a huge concern for me now. I just don't want to buy it all at once. Given that I'll be upgrading to a 1080 ti eventually, what are your thoughts on the new build?
