I put a 7th gen (1151 socket) CPU in an 8th gen (1151 v2) socket – did I fry it?

Hi there.

I've been building PCs for years and today I was helping my girlfriends 10-year old brother build his very first gaming rig.

I was the one who ordered all the parts. However, somehow I've completely missed the fact that there's two types of 1151 CPU sockets. As stated in the title – I put an 1151 socket CPU in an 1151 v2 socket on a 300-series motherboard.
When booting the system it just starts the fans for less then a second and then completely turns off. It's taken me a whole day of constant trial and error to come to the realisation that it was the wrong socket.

I've read the power pins are different on the v2 version socket – which leads me to think I might have short-circuited something.

I've inspected both the motherboard and the CPU and none of it seems damaged.

I'm heading out tomorrow to buy a 200-series motherboard. Possibly also a new i5 7400. I’m a broke student, and can't really afford this, but I really want to get him his long-awaited PC as soon as humanly possible. He is an awesome kid and he was crushed when I couldn't get his PC to work today. I told him I'll fix it tomorrow no matter what.

TL;DR:
I put a 7th gen CPU in a socket for 8th gen CPUs and am worried I might have fried it.

So the big question is; could I have fried the CPU, or possibly the motherboard? Or maybe both? What do you guys think?

Any help, tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

What, EXACT motherboard did you get? You should be able to go to the manufacturer's website and check what CPUs the board will support. If your CPU is listed, then there is some other issue.

The model I used was ASUS Prime Z370-P, and it only lists 8th gen Intel CPUs as supported. So the issue is definitely my own poor choice of motherboard.

To ThatVietGuy and Bob125484:
That is good news. I really hope this is the case. I've been searching for answers to this for many hours and it's starting to look like I just need the correct type of motherboard.

By the way, thank you all for the quick responses; and for spending time on a newcomer like me. :)

Thank you very much for telling me that, this solves another one of my problems; if I want to return the motherboard to the retailer I have to find all the accessories that came with it. And they are spread in so many different places now. Now I can just buy the 8100 and both save me the trouble AND get a cheaper price. Awesome.

Also, I can actually just return the 7400 CPU and get all the money back, thanks to the retailers return warranty.

I think this problem is as good as solved now.

Thank you all again for your quick and effective help!
