I think my GPU has died, though I'm not entirely sure

I have a PC that have been running fine for the last 4 years-ish. But the other night Rainbow Six Seige crashed in a manor where the game froze and the only sound was a buzzing noise. Managed to close down the game but upon restarting my PC and booting the game, the same error happened again, though this time I was not able to close down the game. Instead I had to force my PC to shutdown.

The troubles persisted but it happened during everything and at random times. The crash had also changed a bit, so instead of just freezing the image, the screen would go black.
I then started researching what could be the cause, and from what I could find it seemed to be a corrupted GPU driver. But after completely removing the driver and all of it's remains and then reinstalling the driver again the problem was still there. Even tried installing an older driver, but no luck.

So I decided to try resetting windows. But during the setup of windows it crashed again. So I took out the GPU and since then it have been running perfectly fine.

This brought me to the conclusion that my GPU is most likely dead/dying, but I then though that maybe the problem is with my motherboard.

What do you think?

The system consist of the following:

  • Asus B85 pro gamer
    Asus gtx 780 DC2 OC 3GD5
    intel i7 4771
    hyperX 16GB ddr3 Ram
    Corsair h80i v2
two samsung SSD's - one is 120GB the other 250
    Two HDD - 2TB and 3TB
Some wifi card which is not used

Solution

Assuming your friend had PSU good enough to run your 780 - then it's dead. Las few months there has been many threads about failing 780, so it looks like they were not made with longevity in mind.
