I have an HGST laptop harddrive that failed. I want to get rid of it, however, I am concerned someone could figure out how to pull data from it.

Aside from breaking it with a hammer, what are some ways to ensure there is no recoverable data before I chuck it?

Drill holes in it
Disassembly (fridge magnet donor)
Hammer
Industrial shredder

If it is failed, and cannot be "accessed/seen" when installed in a computer, the only way to prevent data from being read is to physically destroy the disk (inside the case) itself. You can use a hammer and 6" nail through the case, or you can disassemble the case and physically destroy the disk with the hammer.

BTW: Magnets don't work
