Hi guys, I have a GA-H81M DS2 motherboard and I am planning to upgrade the ram. I am planning to buy HyperX Fury 8GB 1866MHz DDR3, will it be compatible?

XMP is Intels eXtreme Memory Profile. Basically it's a factory set of OC values. Most ddr3 default speed is 1333 or 1600. 1866 would be considered OC, so the factory designates XMP profile #1 as 1866. When you first install the ram, it'll run at default speed of 1600MHz, you must physically enter bios and set the XMP to the profile needed. So 3000 might be #1, 2666 might be #2, 2400 #3 etc but it all starts at 1600 default...

Officially that board supports 1333/1600MHz ram, so ordinarily I'd say yes, it'll support the 1866MHz, but will only run at 1600. However, HyperX isn't like standard PnP ram, it runs at rated speeds without xmp, so no, the HyperX isn't supported.

hmm. So what can you recommend for my mobo? I want to have a white ram to match my rig (IF possible) I kinda don't understand the "PnP" and "xmp" Hehe sorry for being a noob.

The ability above is standard Plug-n-play ram, it'll boot in anything at default speeds, up to you and the ram to change things in bios. Kingston HyperX has changed that, and removed the plug-n-play entirely, so no XMP value. If the ram is 3000MHz, it's default speed is 3000MHz, or 1600 or 1866, whatever the ram is rated at. Which is good in the sense that there's nothing to mess with, but bad in the sense that the ram is basically proprietary, it only matches up with the same value. If you stuck a stick of 2400 in with a stick of 3000, you'll have issues.

Oh. Thank you for taking time to explain sir. I really appreciate it. Hmmm, I guess i'll just look some other RAM sticks then.

That was the Only White ram I could find for 1600 DDR3. The problem is there's really little demand for DDR3 now that DDR4 with lga1150 and Ryzen boards is mainstream. You might have better luck with a used set on eBay if you really want White.
