Specs
Windows 7 home (also did it under Windows 10)
AMD FX8120
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 R5
Ballistix
XFX radeon 4870 ( also did it with XFX HD6950 X2 in Crossfire)
WD Green drives, added an SSD samsung
Ultra 1000W PS

Never overclocked. Not running any auto overclocking software.

When it first started, I had Windows 10 and the HD6950s. At random, it would crash to a black screen, GPU fan would go to max speed. I could be on EBay, checking emails, or reading FB. Never had it crash when in a game. It would crash if I wasn't even on. Id walk away, computer would shut monitor down, hour or so later Id hear the GPU fan at max.
It did it enough times to mess up something in Windows. I tried to let Windows check disk, or go through disk repair. It would load Win10 and about 20-30 seconds crash. Black screen and no response from the keyboard (num lock on/off). I tried restore point, reinstall Windows and save files, and reinstall Windows and erase files. It crashed so many times I thought the HDD was bad so I installed a new SSD.
I have Win7 home. Installed WIn7 on SSD. After a few hundred updates, all seemed well. Noticed a few things seemed slower. Hangs on trying to close IE, wont let me install PC pitstop, and a few other items I had.
Went to check email, and crash to black screen, GPU fan at max. I had my older vid card in this time. thinking it was a bad vid card.

Any ideas? Im ready to throw this thing against a wall.

sounds like a typical overheating issue or a driver fault. try to do the following in no particular order :
* download DDU. run it at safemode to clean your drivers. restart in normal mode. install the latest driver for your GPU.
* shutdown PC. remove GPU. unscrew the case. detach the fan wire. and blow/ away the dust from the fans and the heatsink. reattach back to PC.
* check GPU (and also maybe your CPU) temps with HWmonitor/Hwinfo sensors.

if none of that fixes your current situation, then most likely your GPU is going past its mileage. you may want to ask a professional repairman to look into your GPU if it can be saved. or just purchase a brand new one.

BUT if there is nothing wrong with your GPU, then it could be your motherboard or your PSU. those 2 hardwares are hard to troubleshoot without the proper tools.

Newest drivers for the GPU installed. Fresh install of Windows 7.

Same issue on different GPU when it first started. Started crashing under Win 10. Installed fresh Win 7 and different GPU. Same issue.

Thanks for the help.

Ran prime95 for 35 minutes. Never crashed. CPU temp ran up to 65c 149f and when I stopped it it dropped fast to 40c 104f. I got the readings from CPUID HWMonitor.

Closed everything and went to eBay on googles browser and it crashed. Black screen, GPU fan at max. GPU temp was 41-45c 105-114f. No auto restart either. Will sit locked up with black screen and GPU at max.

Voltages stayed steady except for CPU Vcore. It ramped up and down depending on load.

Im on the google browser as I type this. No crash so far. I have noticed that after either a restart after a crash or when I turn the PC on when I open a browser, the whole PC freezes for about 15-20 seconds. After that, everything pops up like nothing happened. Anything I was trying to open will.

Really dont want to spend the money on a new MOBO/CPU/RAM as this PC is only 4 years old.
