Did cryptocurrency mining just murder the video card market again or is something else going on?
1070's starting at $1000?
1080 TI's starting at $1300?

I saw a Craigslist ad for a 1080 for $1000 and laughed, then I saw a 1070 for $600 and thought "WTH?"
I pulled up Newegg and sure enough, prices are insane!

Yup, crypto's. Singapore, where I live, has not been affected, however. Prices are still pretty normal, 1080 is around $566 USD and 1070 is cheaper. Only components that are ridiculously high are Asus GPU's, as every single mining rig I have seen listed has only Asus STRIX GPU's.

To irk you a bit more, I have a friend who earns REALLY REALLY well from his main job (we are talking investment banker), but on the side, runs 6 mining rigs with 8 1080Ti's each. Really makes me feel bad when he comes to my house to talk about it or I visit him because I am stuck with a 760.

There is a huge shortage right now. And most of it is related to the coin mining surge. It's also a supply problem with DRAM and NVIDIA's and AMD's supply chain right now, and that's also really hurting overall system costs, and costs associated with producing DDR4 and producing new GPUs. Believe me I want a 1070TI but there's no way I'm paying over $1,000 for one.

I'm still using a 750ti. Any games that can't run with that I wont buy. So it's either older games or less gaming. My life will probably be better of that way. Didn't spend any money on Steam over Xmas.
