XMP issue. 8700k, 3200MHz C16 RAM

So I think I did something wrong when I enabled XMP. While I saw some fps gains in certain games, my RealBench score went down and in some games I started encountering some stuttering. I'm not sure, but shouldn't synthetic bench scores go UP with faster RAM?

However, the stuttering is the real issue. I can't utilize the RAM fully without XMP but it is also ruining the performance.

I read something about changing the power settings to performance instead of balanced in the BIOS (can't remember where), but I have had issues with that in the past (Asus' preset settings are awful). I am planning on overclocking eventually but I just don't have the time right now.

I also use AI Suite 3 if that matters.

What is the best course of action here?

Important parts:
CPU: i7 8700k @stock
MB: Asus ROG Maximus X Formula
RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz C16. (At stock right now [2133MHz C15])

Rest of the build is first link in my sig.
Clean install so all drivers and software are up to date as of last week.

Possibly unrelated issue:
I notice my desktop icons flicker every so often when I play windowed games. (Steam version of Adventure Capitalist is where I noticed it). I think it does it at any time though. Any ideas? I run MSI:AB almost 24/7, and that is pretty much the only thing that is run in the foreground always.

Solution
Did you confirm that XMP settings match those on the package ram came in?

Might need a little more SA or IO.

Dona any stability testing on RAM, stock or XMP?

XMP gets it wrong sometimes try manually entering settings.
I see a lot of questions about not booting or poor performance when using high speed memory and the 8700K.

Since the 8700K uses DDR4-2666Mhz speed officially, I would manually set the memory parameters to that speed if not overclocking.
1) Memory clock
2) DRAM Timings
3) DRAM voltage

Very interesting. Is there any idea why this issue is occurring?

Will there be a fix?

I guess I should just be glad my PC even boots fine :D.

I am planning on getting some of Vengeance RGB sticks after I pay off the board and CPU, but I was actually hoping to get 3466MHz RAM. Wondering if that is out of the question.

I didn't.

It worked on my Maximus VIII Formula so I assumed it would work on my Maximus X Formula. I will have to check when I get home.

Now that I think about it, it was also set to profile 1 not profile 2. Would that have been an issue? I'm pretty sure the RAM in question uses XMP 2.0 (just checked, it does)... Does that mean profile 2? I thought profile 2 was only for extreme tweaking?

Need to consider IMC on new CPU also.

If you have profile options I would try them out.

Here is a great thread for memory stability and settings, http://www.overclock.net/t/1569364/official-intel-ddr4-24-7-memory-stability-thread

OMG... I just stumbled on this on Corsair's support site searching for compatibility with the Vengeance RGB for my MB....

I'm pissed now...

"We include a pair of XMP profiles instead of just one for users who want to control how much power is consumed by the memory. The first XMP profile runs the DDR4 at its specification of 1.2V, while the second offers a higher speed at the cost of bumping the voltage to 1.35V. The first profile, then, is officially supported, while the second is not and instead offers a baseline of what the memory should be able to achieve."

It is profile 2. It must have chosen profile 2 automatically on my last board because it was always at 1.35v not 1.2...

That's why they call me EpickFa1L...

Sure its always best to go with QVL, but on my on my Asus z170 Ranger my Gskill ripjaws 3200 cl14 were not on the list. Got them working by manipulating SA and IO. Had Trident Z 3200 cl14 before that, and they were on QVL. They wouldn't work no matter what settings I used.

Using the same Gskill ripjaws 3200 cl14, on my Hero X. They are on the OVL for this board, but XMP settings were off.

New platform, XMP gremlins, whatever. Sometimes you have to take matter into your own hands.

Sombody around here is known for saying that the usual problem with people and their computers is not the computer, but what is sitting behind the keyboard.:)

They should tell you these things on the friggin box for the RAM :D

Also figured out the flickering. Apparently that is the icons refreshing. I think my F5 key was stuck or something. Cleaned out the board a little it appears to have fixed it. Tried out the F5 a few times and that is DEFINITELY what it was. Just need to make sure that the F5 key is not stuck and that THAT is what it was.

Really wish I could give credit for more than one solution.

Calvin's suggestion really helped with my new RAM sticks.

Tried both XMP profiles and neither would even boot. Set timings, freq. and volt. myself and BOOM! works like a charm.

3466MHz C16 on a 8700k.
