Hey all, i have an issue.

When ever im on a game, i get this weird whining noise that comes from my pc, something even more strange? it quietens down when i turn my monitor off, and stops completely if i dont have a game running. Games i have noticed it making the noise in are:

Assassins creed origins
Warframe
Crossout (only slightly)
Witcher 3

Also sounds like its coming from the front of my case, listened to the side, and its only very slight.

Just thought i would post on here incase its something serious.

Here are my specs if you need to know them:

MSI GTX1080 TI
I7 4790K
Asrock B85m Pro 4
4 sticks of 4gb ddr3 ram
650w PSU
Coolermaster TX3 evo CPU cooler
Zalman Z3 plus Case

take your videocard out & plug the monitor into the onboard video port to see if the whine goes away or still happens. open the side panel & put your ear near that side to localize where the whine is coming from as the psu can whine too.

Coil whine can happen without overclocking, and 10 series cards do a lot of their own overclocking. On my 900 series cards it certainly scaled with FPS.

Where it comes from can be a bit misleading, these are usually high frequency noises and they can be modified by airflow and case design.

If you don't mind using V-Sync, turn that on to see if it mitigates the noise, that will confirm it is the GPU. One suggestion I have found, but not tried , is to run a benchmark, take a wooden pencil or dowel, and put your ear to one end with the other to various GPU components. Occasionally you'll find a component vibrating and can then just take a dab of silicon caulk to silence or muffle it.

If you have a front mounted power supply though, look there. PSU coil whine is usually less noticeable due to normal computer noise, but that usually relates to the switching frequency of the supply. Many are quite high frequency and can't be heard expect by the sharpest ears. But components can get loose and vibrate in a lower sympathetic frequency.

On occasion you will get GPU coil whine coming through your audio. This happens less often as MB manufacturers have gotten better at isolating the audio circuits, but I've had it happen to two different systems.
