Im about to buy this external hdd, and read that it comes "wd SmartWare trial version" my question is, when that period trial is over, can I still use it as a normal storage device such as a thumbstick or else? Or do I need to buy that software at the end? should I or should I not worry about that software?

Solution

I use the WD Elements 1 TB external drive on a daily basis and I have never used WD SmartWare. I wiped the drive with a format as soon as I bought it, so it is safe to assume that you do not need any additional software to use it as a storage device. FYI - I use it with Macrium Reflect Free to perform system image backups. https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

I own 6 WD external HDDs (damned handy devices for backing up all my computers). I delete the proprietary software and use the built-in backup functions of Win10.

The "Free" version of the WD backup software has to be downloaded from their website.
