Is there an estimate on how long the gpu prices will be this d*cked? I'm trying to get a 1070 or a 980 ti but I'm not tryna spend a grand on a graphics card. That's a dead mission. I sold my gpu expecting to picked up my new card but right as the money came through all the prices were doubled. Is it going to be a long time before it fixes bc I can be a little impatient sometimes?

Most crypto-currencies continue to fall today. Wether or not this is a permanent trend is anybodys guess.
You might as well look into a crystal ball.
The reality is that they rise and fall all the time. Sometimes big dips, sometimes massive gains.
All I would do is keep a constant eye on GPU prices. When they approach something sensible... BUY ONE QUICKLY!
The full-on mining 'craze' won't last forever, but at the same time crypto-currencies and mining are here to stay in some form or other (I believe).
That means we will continue to see wild fluctuations in the prices of GPUs for a long while yet...
There is literally no way to tell how long. However, AMD has some new cards coming out so, might be a chance to get one of those...if your lucky.

Bitcoin is no longer mined using GPU's, but the Etherium currency is apparently designed to keep from going the way of Bitcoin. So it could be a long, long time. They fact that there are real or artificial shortages in the supply of cards does not help.

The only relief we can get at this point is if AMD and nVidia increase production for consumer chips. BUt AMD has the new line coming soon and nVidia should have something new around the end of the year.

In all likelihood any new cards (AMD or Nvidia) that come out will be better/more efficient at mining that current ones, meaning they'll probably get snapped up as fast or faster unless crypto mining implodes before then. And availability of new gen GPUs can be an issue even without miners buying them up.

So there's really no way of knowing when card pricing/availability will stabilize.

That's why some luck is involved. A Mod here was able to get a Vega card when they first got scarce. Just some luck they were on when it became available.

so are you saying i have to pay the full grand if i want that graphics card since this could last a long while?

I wouldn't recommend it. You will have to watch the retailers every day multiple times a day to get the GPUs when they first come in stock. Some GPUs sell out in minutes, others hours, and the ones not many want will stay around for a day or two. My point is you can find them at the right time for a decent price. But you have to be looking all the time.

Set auto notification for price drops/restocking on sites that offer this. I think there are also 3rd party websites that offer alerts for price/stock changes across a number of different retailers.

Check online stores daily if you're really determined.
