Faultfinding Nvidia GPU not visible in Win10

My desktop / gaming rig has recently experienced a problem with the GPU.

After a reboot last week the monitor no longer worked on the GPU output. After investigation I worked out that the GPU was no longer visible to Windows it had switched over to the Intel integrated graphics.

The GPU is visible as a 'hidden device' in device manager and I have tried the standard faultfinding for this case: clean uninstall using the Display Driver Uninstall tool, reseat card, boot into safe mode, and reinstall drivers. This fixed the problem temporarily but after the next reboot the GPU disappeared again.

I am looking for advice on how to proceed with faultfinding. It seems like a number of things could be wrong (windows install, GPU fault, MB fault, power supply...) but I don't know what to tackle next and I'm short on time to muck around with it.

If it is relevant, the rig overall is about 5 years old but the GPU is new 6 months ago. It has also just been shipped back after an posting overseas although it worked fine when first reconnected.

PC Specs are:
OS: Win 10 Home 64 bit (10.0.16299)
MB: asrock Z68 Pro 3
CPU: i5-2500K
GPU: nVidia GTX 1050Ti (390.65)
RAM: 2 x 4GB DDR3 1600

Thanks in advance for any advice on how to proceed.
