Hey, i've been getting massive ping spikes for about 1-2 hours most days since i moved to my new house on all devices, usually after 8pm. My biggest concern is my PC, because that is what i am on most frequently, but have seen the spikes throughout my laptop and phone. We are currently using 25Mbps NBN. My ISP is Telstra. Everything in our house is connected using WiFi. I haven't tried using Ethernet because it's quite far away, but if it i have to move my rig then that's fine. I do have a 5Ghz channel, but am currently just running 2.4 because my PC doesn't pick it up. My laptop does use 5Ghz, but i am yet to test if the ping spikes still occur, as they are usually random, and i forget about it.

You need to ping the router ip not something on the internet.

If the problem is actually wireless there is little you can do to fix it. The only options are pretty much to try other radio channels and maybe force the router to run 20mhz rather than 40mhz channels. You would try 1,6,11 on the 2.4 band.

If you do not see the issue on wifi then it could be the internet. I would try to disable the IPv6 in the router. It should in theory work as good as ipv4 but many times it takes a different path. It makes it harder to troubleshoot, mostly because it is not use as much.

Disabling ipv6 didn't change anything, and my router is already set to 20Mhz. Any other options?? Would buying a wireless AC pcie card help? Currently only using wireless n.

Currently, i am getting the ping spikes only on my desktop, and not on my other devices. I've moved my PC right next to the router to see if i can get a 5Ghz channel, but i cannot, and am still yet to test ethernet as i dont have a cable laying around.

EDIT: Put it on Auto (20/40Mhz) and it seems to have stopped the spikes, could just be coincidence though, as they come and go.

If you get the ping spikes pinging your router then the problem is likely interference in the wifi. You either must find the source of the interference and eliminate it or find a way to avoid it. In most cases you can do neither. The most common cause is your neighbors using wireless and the signals overlapping yours.

You can look at using powerline networks to hook your pc up via ethernet. Be very sure to test via a ethernet cable, it could be your ISP has over sold the internet capacity in your area and you are competing with your neighbors for the bandwidth. When it is time of day related it tends to be over utilization . It can of course be the neighbor got home and started using his WiFi so you need to be sure the problem is not the internet before you spend money because powerline will not fix a ISP capacity problem.

So is there any way to avoid an ISP capacity problem, or not be affected by it?
